Sand Filled Synthetic Turf Pitch Costs

Sand filled synthetic turf pitches are very popular in the UK due to the multi functional/multi sport use in all weather conditions. Sand filled pitches can also be used on MUGA construction, due to the different multi sports played on the same surface, in a contained and controlled environment.

Sand Filled Synthetic Turf Specification

Sand filled synthetic turf 2G all weather pitch surfacing can be used for many different sports like football, hockey, tennis and rugby and can be constructed to many different specifications, designs and sizes such as 60m x 30m. The sand filled synthetic turf pitch surfacing is made up of an artificial grass carpet which has a layer of sand infill installed at the base of the turf fibres. This sand infill layers helps to keep the grass fibres upright and maintain good performance characteristics. These types of surfaces can be used at organisations such as sports clubs, playgrounds, parks and schools and can be built to suit many different budgets and specifications. There are also other 2G synthetic grass surfaces which can be used for astroturf pitches. Sand dressed is also a very common choice, sand dressed means that the fibres of the grass are only partly filled whereas sand filled means that the fibre of the artificial grass is filled to the tip of the grass.

Rejuvenation and renovation can also play parts in the design and construction of these surfaces. The rejuvenation process involves the extraction of contaminated sand infill from the 2G sand filled synthetic turf or sand filled artificial grass, this dirty sand is then replaced with a new layer of clean sand. It’s important to carry out rejuvenation if the sand infill becomes dirty and contaminated as it can have a negative effect on the performance and safety qualities of the sand filled synthetic turf facility if left untreated. The maintenance costs can be significant if the surfacing is left as things like sand infill contamination, sand infill compaction and joint repairs may all need to be considered.

Sand Filled Pitch Costs

The costs of the full build or construction of these sand filled synthetic turf sports facilities can vary due to the size, specification, location and type of surfacing can have effects on the total cost. The services carried out when repairing synthetic turf pitches can include seam or joint repairs and new game line markings – often with them being cut into the existing grass. Tears and rips can occur if the surfaces has been damaged by use, seams not quite being installed correctly or just plain old bad luck! They can however, be fixed quickly in lots of cases is the problem is dealt with as soon as possible.

We are specialists in the sports sector and we have a number of options to help you with repairing synthetic turf sports pitches. We can supply artificial grass repair kits which are very effective in repairing synthetic turf surfaces, we can also visit site to assess the damage and to give the client an honest opinion. More serious repairs or reactive maintenance may need to be carried out the pitch is in very bad condition, this could include infill rejuvenation or even a total resurfacing project. As the current man made synthetic grass may be constructed, designed and specified over many different areas and are sizes, only a small amount may need to be repaired. These kits include the backing geo textile material, glue cartridge, 4mm tongue spreader, gloves and a mastic gun and this will enable you to remove the existing grass that needs to be repaired (section only) and replace with new, although the new grass will have to be sourced.

Proactive Maintenance

In order to prevent any damage to your synthetic turf sport pitch, it is recommended that you carry out regular proactive maintenance to keep the artificial surface in top condition. Synthetic Turf Football Field Installers

Synthetic turf football field surfaces and multi use games area pitches can be designed for multiple sports including rugby and hockey as well as football. These artificial grass sports surfaces are now becoming common facilities at schools, colleges and leisure centres in the UK.

Contact Our Team

Turf Football Field Specification

The synthetic turf football field systems are perfect for schools, local authorities and sports clubs that are looking for a long term, durable safe surface that is an upgrade to their existing old grass surfacing. The most advanced artificial grass specification for football pitches is 3G synthetic turf, this also provides ideal playing characteristics for rugby. The 3G multi purpose sports surface has a layer of rubber crumb installed within the artificial fibres to keep them stable. Turf football field surfacing can be installed for most area sizes as there is no set specification or design in terms of the dimensions.

3G Sports Pitch Installation

The construction for a synthetic turf football field is generally done through a similar process by most sport surfacing installers, starting with the groundworks and foundations. Before anything can be installed, the existing grass or soil area needs to be excavated down to the required depth. Next a layer of porous stones is laid down as a sub base, these stones will all fit together to create a solid foundation for the rest of the surfacing to be installed onto. A macadam layer is then applied onto the stones to give a smooth base so the final sports pitch surface is even and performs well. A shockpad will then be installed before the synthetic grass surface, the shockpad helps to keep players safe by absorbing impact and cushioning muscles and joints. The 3G turf football field surfacing is then applied on top of the shockpad layer, it is rolled out like a carpet and each piece is joined together with glue at the seams. Sand and rubber infill will then be applied within the artificial turf fibres to improve stability and keep the grass upright. Multi purpose line markings can then be applied to the turf football field surface for full sized football, 5 a side football and rugby.

Football Field Equipment

Once the construction of the sports pitch itself is complete, the facility can then have extras installed like sports floodlighting and sports fencing in a range of specifications. These accessories can be used to increase long term revenue into the facility by keeping it secure and allowing it to be rented out to other teams and clubs in the evenings. The astroturf football field surface is designed to take a stud from a boot along with looking and playing like a natural grass pitch as the surfacing is normally a minimum of 40mm thick. Maintenance equipment and services can also be provided to help you look after your synthetic turf football field once the construction project is complete. These maintenance services could include chemical treatments to stop moss contamination, drag brushing, infill top up and rejuvenation and removal of dirt and debris.

One of our recent projects was the installation of a 5-a-side football pitch at a football and tennis sports centre in Liverpool. The existing area was a tennis court facility inside an outdoor sports structure, however the sand filled synthetic grass tennis court surface had become worn out and the carpet was starting to rip.

This meant that the surface was potentially dangerous and could not be used to its full potential so the sports centre decided to upgrade the court and transform it into a brand new 5-a-side football pitch facility.

5-a-side Football Pitch Construction

Many clubs choose to have a 5-a-side football pitch or full sized sports pitch installed to replace natural grass surfaces which can be difficult to manage and become waterlogged in wet weather. The advantages of 3G synthetic turf are that they require much less maintenance than real grass and they can be played on throughout the year during all weather conditions (excluding snow).

Professional football clubs often use 3G pitches for training and lower league teams even resurface their main pitch in 3G grass to save money on maintenance and generate extra income by renting the facility out to others. Some leisure centres and clubs install 3G surfacing to upgrade an existing 2G facility which has become worn out, just like this project.

The first stage of work was to remove the existing sand filled tennis court carpet which had become damaged and ripped over time through heavy use. Once the worn out artificial grass surfacing had been ripped up, the macadam sub base underneath was still suitable for use with the new layer of surfacing. An engineered macadam sub base is preferred for sports pitch installations because it creates a smooth and even foundations which are extremely durable and long lasting.

The next step was to install the new 3G 5-a-side football pitch flooring onto the macadam sub base. This was done by rolling out the 3G grass carpet in separate pieces and then joining the pieces together with a specialised glue at the seams and the edges to secure it in place.

Inlaid football line markings were then applied in white to create a professional finish and accurate scoring for matches. The final part of the 5-a-side football pitch construction was to put sand and rubber infill within the grass fibres, this helps to keep the fake grass pile upright and improves the playing qualities for a good sporting experience.

Completed 3G Football Surface

The final result of this 5-a-side football pitch construction was a brand new top quality synthetic sports surface in the best technology of artificial turf. The 3G football pitch can be used all year round and even gives the sports centre the opportunity to rent it out to gain some extra revenue.

What is a Netball Court?

A netball court is a designated playing area specifically designed for the sport of netball, providing a regulated space for players to engage in matches following set dimensions and specifications.

The purpose of a netball court extends beyond just being a playing area; it serves as a crucial platform where players showcase their skills, strategies, and teamwork. The layout of the court, with distinct zones like the shooting circle and centre third, plays a vital role in ensuring fair gameplay and strategic movements.

Netball court dimensions are standardised to promote consistency across matches, with specific measurements for line markings, goalposts, and centre circle radius.

The surfacing materials are carefully chosen for durability, traction, and player safety, with options ranging from acrylic surfaces to rubberised courts. The court’s well-defined boundaries enhance player engagement, encouraging quick decision-making, agile movements, and effective communication among team members.

Standard Size of a Netball Court

The standard size of a netball court is 30.5m x 15.25m.

The World Netball Rules outline these specific dimensions, ensuring a consistent and fair playing field for all participants.

Player positioning becomes crucial in this game to maximise scoring opportunities and defensive strategies. Specific zones are dedicated to each player’s role and movements.

Adherence to these standardised court measurements not only promotes consistency in gameplay but also ensures the safety of the players by allowing ample room for quick passes and agile footwork.

The dimensions of a netball court encompass the length, width, run-off zones, and specific areas that define the playing enclosure, ensuring a standardised layout for competitive gameplay.

Standard netball courts are meticulously designed to adhere to specific measurements set by governing bodies, such as the International Netball Federation.

The run-off zones have a minimum width of 3 metres, providing ample space for players to manoeuvre along the sidelines without obstruction.

The shooting circles at each end of the court are essential components where attackers aim to score goals, further enhancing the strategic elements of netball gameplay.

What is the Recommended Surface for a Netball Court?

The recommended surface for a netball court often includes polymeric or macadam surfaces.

These surfaces provide the necessary durability, traction, and visibility for players, complemented by clear line markings for accurate gameplay.

Regarding choosing between polymeric and macadam surfaces for netball courts, it’s crucial to consider the specific needs of the players and the long-term maintenance requirements.

Polymeric surfaces offer excellent shock absorption, reducing the risk of injuries during gameplay. On the other hand, macadam surfaces are known for their smooth texture and consistent ball bounce, enhancing player performance. Both options require regular upkeep, such as line repainting and surface cleaning, to ensure optimal playing conditions.

What are the Markings on a Netball Court?

The markings on a netball court mark the field of play, including key boundary lines, centre circle, goal circles, and other essential indicators that define the court dimensions and playing areas.

In a standard netball court, the sideline markings signify the boundaries within which the game is played.

Each end of the court features goal lines that mark the scoring zones and determine successful goal attempts.

The centre circle serves as a pivotal area for the initial pass-offs and restricts early player movements at the start of each quarter.

The shooting circle, surrounded by the semicircular goal circle, designates the area where only specific player roles can score, adding strategic depth to the game.

Netball courts have sports lines that are 50mm wide and are completed using a specialist sports line acrylic coating. Similar sports surfaces that can be played on these surfaces include lacrosse, Football, tennis and Basketball.

What is a MUGA?

A MUGA, or multi use games area, is a space used for multiple sports and play activities.

Utilising a MUGA maximises space efficiency, providing multiple sports options in one designated area.

Users, whether children, teens, or adults, can enjoy organised matches or casual games due to the inclusive nature of these facilities.

Wetpour and Artificial Grass Play Area

We installed a wetpour rubber and artificial grass playground for a school in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Take a look at the video below to see the full process and the final result.

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Rubber Playground and Artificial Grass Surfacing in Middlesborough, Yorkshire.

So our team were contacted by this company who were looking to have surfacing fitted that was ideal for their outdoor space.

They explained specifically that they were keen on having a new flooring for their outdoor play area, as well as artificial grass fitted to give the appearance of a natural look. We broke down the options we could provide, and were on site installing soon after.

So for the playground flooring we fitted, we opted to go for a EPDM rubber wetpour surface. This flooring type is absolutely perfect for outdoor play areas, as its spongy rubber qualities actually soak up the rain making it a porous system.

Rubber and Artificial Grass Play Area in Middlesbrough

Also, wetpour is one of the safest surface types on the market, meeting the critical fall height requirements necessary for UK playgrounds and offering that all-important peace of mind for playground owners.

Talk To Us

Finally, this is a surface that can be specified in basically any colour choice and design you like, which we can plan out with you before the work takes place.

In terms of the artificial grass we fit, we offer plenty of different specifications to suit the client’s requirements. For example, we can install surfaces suited for small back gardens, all the way up to full-sized sports pitches!

Artificial grass can have many benefits, and for this installation, the main benefit was that it offered a natural-looking surface without the need for the maintenance required for natural grass.

You can see now that this work has now been completed, and looks fantastic across their outdoor space. The client was really pleased with what we carried out for them.

Netball Court Construction in Stockport

We were recently approached to carry out a netball court construction in Stockport to refurbish an existing sports court. The facility had become damaged and contaminated with moss as a result of poor maintenance. The project included full installation of groundworks, polymeric rubber surfacing, anti-slip painting and specialist sports fencing.

Get a Free Quote

Installing a Netball Court

As the existing sports court was in poor condition and had become badly contaminated with moss and algae due to a lack of maintenance, the first thing we had to do was excavate the ground. This involved getting rid of the old court and preparing the ground for the installation of the new surface. For any sports court installation project, the groundworks are extremely important as they provide a stable foundation for the rest of the surfacing and ensure that the facility is durable and remains safe for as long as possible. The next part of the ground preparation works was to install a dynamic stone sub base, this was made up of angular stones which are specially selected for use in sports pitches and courts.

These stones are porous so they let water drain through them, allowing the netball court to be used as an all-weather surface. Once we had compacted the stones to get them completely flat, we then had to install a layer of macadam as a base before the polymeric surfacing could be put down. The macadam base layer is also fully permeable to comply with the efficient drainage system of the sports court. The next stage of the netball court construction was to install the polymeric surfacing itself, this is made up of an EPDM rubber crumb which is mixed together in a binder and laid out onto the macadam.

Talk To Us

Anti Slip Netball Paint

When the polymeric rubber surfacing had been left to cure, we could then apply a non slip paint coating in green to give the court more grip and better traction for netball, as well as enhancing the playing qualities for other sports. This specialist polyurethane sports paint is combined with an aggregate of sand and aluminium oxide to achieve the right slip resistance qualities for the desired sports. We also applied anti slip line markings in different colours for netball, basketball and tennis which means the polymeric rubber court can be used as an all purpose sports facility for a number of activities.

The client also chose to have specially designed twin bar rebound fencing installed around the perimeter of the MUGA netball court to keep the area secure. This fencing specification is ideal for this type of facility as it is resistant against heavy use from lots of different sports and also prevents a loss of equipment during gameplay.

MUGA Sports Court Facility

After the full netball court construction project was complete, the end result was a brand new polymeric surface with professional multi-sport line-markings and secure perimeter fencing. The client was very pleased with the final sports facility and is looking forward to using it for many different activities.

We have installed multi use sports courts like this one all over the UK and we would be happy to discuss specifications and prices for a project you’re looking to carry out. Please have a look at our website at http://softsurfaces.co.uk/ where you can find out more about our services, or you can use our contact form to send us over the details of your enquiry. School All Weather MUGA Pitches

A lot of schools often have numerous pitches designated to different sports. This can take up a lot of room as well as being costly. A better solution to this issue is installing a Multi Use Games Area (or more commonly known as a MUGA) pitch.

Today’s blog will cover how school all-weather MUGA pitches are a much more viable option than installing multiple surfaces. The fact that these are weather resistant allows your students to get more playtime outside without the weather interfering with the quality of the surface.

Find Out More

Multi Use Sports Pitch Designs

MUGA pitches are incredibly popular amongst schools for how they allow multiple sports to be played on them without requiring multiple pitches to be installed. They can be a cheap and more efficient way of allowing your pupils/members to take part in multiple activities. If you’re interested though, you will first have to pick a design. The most common multi use sports pitch designs include:

  • Tarmacadam – Popular in schools as it is relatively cheap to install, and a wide range of sports may be played on tarmac including Tennis, Netball and Basketball.
  • Polymeric – A rubberised hardcourt sport surface. We can apply anti-slip colour coatings to create additional grip and improve the overall look and playing qualities.
  • 3G – Perfect for sports like football and rugby with its shockpad installation and resilient surface.
  • 2G – Brilliant for sports like hockey as it allows for less friction on the ball and helps with its movement of it.
  • Needlepunch – Great for nurseries and primary schools with its softness and it still allows for multisport activities to take place on it.

Each of these different designs comes with unique benefits that can help your school/club appeal to its demographic. Make sure you check out each all-weather material in more detail to get more information about them.

Best Winter Sport Surfaces

Winter can be a hindrance to activities as the weather can ruin the surface and make it too dangerous to play any sports on. However, certain surfaces can handle the weather/season a lot better than other ones can. If you are planning on playing a lot of sports during the colder months, it’s important to know what the best winter sport surfaces are.

Synthetic grass is a good example. Unlike natural grass, the artificial carpet won’t become muddy and waterlogged during wet weather. Providing you apply the appropriate maintenance, these surfaces can withstand the cold and miserable winter months. View this post to find out more about the differences between real and fake grass.

Tarmacadam is another great surface to consider as winter approaches. Make sure that regular maintenance is performed on the surface by checking regularly for any wear and tear. Doing this will make sure that the court stays up to maximum performance and will avoid the winter doing any more damage. Tarmacadam can withstand this season quite well and will still allow activities to take place on top of it. Check out our range of sport surfaces here to see the different ones we offer.

All Weather MUGA Sports Facilities

The all-weather MUGA sports facilities offer brilliant durability throughout the year. The list below shows how our surfaces handle different conditions without struggling:

  • Heat – Surfaces like synthetic grass don’t need water and therefore can survive the extreme heat without de-colouring or dying. With other surfaces, our paint is UV-resistant which means that the sun and heat won’t affect the colour of the material.
  • Rain – Too much rain can lead to grass pitches becoming flooded and muddy. However, all the surfaces are porous, which allows the rain to fall right through the surface and be drained properly. Puddles and soggy areas can’t be formed, and the surface can keep dry.
  • Ice – Incredibly dangerous, it can lead to many injuries occurring. These surfaces allow for de-icing products to be used meaning that ice won’t have a chance to form fully and become hazardous.

Weather is usually not an issue for these surfaces and they will still work at their optimum if they are maintained well and kept in great condition. School all-weather MUGA pitches are a great way to keep sport activities flowing without any disruption occurring. Children can also learn teamwork with MUGA pitches as they can play a range of sports.

Multi Use Games Areas for Schools

MUGA courts are a great solution for schools as they can be a cheap alternative to installing separate courts for all the different activities. They allow for a wide variety of sports to be played with no issue and don’t single out specific sports. Schools should see this as a viable option for their sports programmes as they can teach more sporting activities.

Check out our post on why schools choose artificial grass to learn more about the benefits and why these surface types work for school environments.

3 Reasons to Build Dual Use MUGA Ball Court

Multi or dual-use games areas are a popular sports facility for schools, colleges, sports clubs, and leisure centres in the UK. These versatile sports areas can be especially line marked so a number of different sports including football, netball, and tennis can be played on them. This makes them perfect for adding variety to the sports facility at your organisation.

Why Install a Dual Use MUGA Ball Court?

Outdoor multi use games areas can be constructed in a number of different types of surfacing including porous macadam, artificial grass and polymeric rubber, each different surface can be installed to suit individual projects and specifications to give you the best facility possible. There are a number of reasons why installing a multi-use sports area would be a great idea.

1. MUGAs Save Space

Having a single sports surface with the capacity to house a number of sports through a range of different coloured sport line markings is a fantastic way of saving space if you haven’t got a lot of land and can’t build a separate area for each sport. School all-weather MUGAs are perfect for this if you want to provide a range of sports that children can play.

2. Lower Maintenance Costs

One of the beauties of having only one surface to play a multitude of sports on is that there is only one surface to clean and maintain. This cuts down on the physical labour of having to maintain different courts. It therefore lowers the costs of potential repairs or resurfacing jobs. These may need carrying out if the surface becomes damaged or worn out.

3. Encourage Variety

If a school or sports club does not have the space to build separate facilities for individual sports, a dual-use ball court area is a great alternative. This is a simple way of getting kids into playing a variety of different sports all in one place.

For example with a multi use games area children could participate in sports such as:

  • Netball
  • Hockey
  • Football
  • Tag rugby
  • Basketball
  • Tennis

The sports would all be available in one place meaning there is no need to install a separate court for each one. You also won’t have to choose just one or two sports to play.
