In July 2017, our team completed an installation of porous resin bound surfacing at Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield ground. The work was done in the area surrounding the club’s retail store which features exclusive products and a café.

There is a large pedestrian space at the front of the store and around the perimeter. The club needed a strong, long-lasting and porous paving type to cover the area. Resin-bound gravel offers all of these qualities and it’s also low maintenance so it seemed the perfect choice for this project.

Resin Bound Gravel Products

Our installers laid around 4000m2 of the Addagrip Terrabound surface in a number of colours to create an attractive design. The colours were also chosen to match the same type of paving which had been installed to the main stand at Liverpool FC in 2016.

The client chose to have a blend of 6mm Rhine Gold and 6mm Tuscan Pebble in some areas, along with 6mm Lucerne Silver in others. This created a contrasting colour design to guide fans around the area on match days.

As well as the large pedestrian space, there were also a number of newly planted trees that required perimeter surfacing. To complete this, our team laid 244m2 of tree pits using the Addastone TP in Silver Grey aggregate at a depth of 75mm. We also backfilled the tree collars with loose aggregate to allow for further growth.

Porous Paving Designs

It’s becoming increasingly common to install porous paving at various locations in the UK. This is a popular flooring type for domestic driveways, outdoor path surfaces and large public spaces. It offers an attractive design along with permeable qualities which improve drainage. In fact, if you are planning on extending your driveway, it’s now law that you must install porous paving to the new area.

There are several advantages to having permeable stone surfacing in outdoor spaces. Some of these include:

  • Water passes through easily into the ground to prevent flooding
  • Durable and robust to withstand heavy regular use
  • Suitable for pedestrians, traffic, wheelchairs and pushchairs
  • Low maintenance requirements so easy to look after
  • Decorative design with plenty of colour options

These are some of the main reasons why Liverpool FC chose this specification for the Anfield ground. You can see more details of the project here and find more details of how the installation process took place.

The full work was completed prior to the grand opening of the store as well as the team’s first home game in August 2017. The club also carried out a pitch renovation in 2017 which you can see more about at their site if you are interested in this work too.

Resin Bound Driveway Paving

Many different surfaces are used when it comes to driveways, but one of the most popular types of surfacing is resin bound stone. This material offers plenty of benefits for vehicles, people and the environment it has been laid in.

The flooring is created by mixing natural stone gravel with a polyurethane resin until a mixture is formed known as resin bound gravel. It’s immune to cracking and requires low maintenance; these are some of the main reasons why this specification is chosen above others.

With a long-lasting life cycle if cared for, and added slip resistance, this has become a popular surface type not just for driveways but for paths, patios, pool surrounds, tree pits etc. Soft Surfaces have done a lot of resin bound driveway installations for commercial and residential projects and therefore are incredibly experienced in this field. Check out this page for more details on pathway surfacing that we can offer.

Driveway Paving Ideas

This type of stone surfacing is well known for being incredibly effective for cars, wheelchairs and pushchairs as they can roll easily due to their smooth surface. A lot of driveways are made from resin stone paving for this very reason. Not only does it benefit the vehicle that is driving over the drive, but it can have a lot more advantages for the user. This is one of many driveways paving ideas that you could consider.

Due to the material that resin stone surfacing is made up of, a tarmacadam sub-base would be ideal for the actual resin stone. Reason being that it is porous and is Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) compliant. Visit this post to learn more about SuDS and how they help the environment. This is often why the sub base is recommended to be laid beforehand as they both allow for similar properties to occur.

A common problem is when driveways get flooded with puddles. Cars can struggle to get out if the puddles are big and deep enough. The stone paving is the solution to this issue as the surface is porous, meaning that water goes through into the ground below and isn’t just collected on top of the drive, avoiding the problem of flooding from occurring.

Resin Stone Driveway Designs

Firstly, the range of colours. Resin-bound paving has a brilliant wide range of colours, meaning you can make your driveway fit the design of its surroundings easily. In addition, the depth of the actual surface can be altered so it can match most ground levels without any problems. We can supply a range of design ideas and options so you can find one that suits you. Some of the common colour choices we offer include:

  • Autumn Gold
  • Beige
  • Black Basalt
  • Brittany Bronze
  • Red Granite
  • Silver Grey

Visit our Resin Bound Designer to see all of the different colour options and decide which one would suit you best.

Many people also get annoyed with how some driveways can end up growing weeds, which will require a lot of maintenance to avoid this problem from happening. Resin stone is brilliant since weeds can’t grow through the surface. This means your driveway can stay looking good without the panic of weeds and other plants growing in unwanted places.

Resin Bound Driveway Cost

It’s important to keep in mind your budget when it comes to installing a resin stone driveway. The surface can get quite expensive depending on what requirements you ask for and such. The bigger the area, the more expensive the installation will be. Other additions to the surfacing will cost a bit more but in total, you will be saving money on maintenance. This is one main factor to think about with regards to the resin-bound driveway cost.

The resin-bound surfaces will require little maintenance after the installation. Click here to see more about the maintenance methods required. Regular checks should be performed on the flooring to double-check that no damage, contaminants and/or dirt are present. Spotting these things early allows you to act quickly and to stop any more problems from occurring or developing.

Cleaning the surface isn’t a problem either. All that is required is a power washer and for it to be pointed at an angle, around 200mm up from the ground. By doing this, the stone surface will not sustain any damage when you are washing it. Regular cleaning will stop dirt from blocking the porous material and remove contaminants from spreading across it.

Apart from that, not much maintenance has to be performed on the driveway as it will take care of itself mainly. Performing regular checks of the surface could extend the life cycle by years, saving you even more money in the future. Cleaning will help even more to avoid any blockages and eventually damage.

Domestic Driveway Paving Ideas

Looking to redo your existing driveway? In need of domestic driveway paving ideas as part of a whole new look for your home? Driveways can be an absolute boon for families on a daily basis. Whether you’re getting your car off the road or are making a statement with a welcome run-up to your property, a great-looking drive should also be one that offers incredible durability and enhanced wear and tear protection.

It goes without saying that you are going to need to look for a surface that weathers the years to come, as well as one which looks the part with regard to your existing homestead.

Contact Our Team

There are a number of different driveway design ideas that can arrive through a variety of different materials. From traditional gravel and stone driveways to resin-bound stone options and even block paving, no two driveways are really quite the same – which is why we’re going to take a look at some of the most effective and attractive domestic driveway paving ideas available on the market today for you to choose from.

Resin Bound Gravel Driveways

Resin-bound gravel driveways are undoubtedly amongst some of the hardest-wearing and best-looking options available to the domestic market in the UK. Easy to set up and offering years of hassle-free use for cars and vehicles arriving to and fro, porous stone-based surfaces can easily prevent puddles and can remain steadfast against the threat of rain, weather and, of course, time itself. It’s also commonly used for paths which you can see more of on this page if you have a walkway that needs a new surface.

Gravel is a popular choice for domestic driveway paving ideas as a result of cost and availability, though there are a few more reasons as to why resin gravel may be worth your interest.

Get a Free Quote

For one, resin bound driveways are immensely tough on weeds. Troublesome and perennial weeds can make any drive look unsightly and unkempt if given half a chance and, as such, it’s high time you gave them their marching orders. They simply cannot grow up through a resin gravel drive surface – you’re fully protected.

These stone driveways are a great choice for those homeowners aiming to make regular use of their paving but want to still retain a certain look and to keep maintenance to a minimum. Maintaining resin gravel is as simple as basic cleaning on a regular basis – it’s always a good idea to focus on prevention as opposed to cures with regard to surface damage. Why not think about using a resin-bound model of the driveway for your new look?

Block Paving Driveway Designs

Block paving driveway designs are popular with many homes thanks to their diversity in application. It’s safe to say that regardless of the look you are aiming for and regardless of what look you are hoping to achieve alongside your home’s exterior, you’ll be able to achieve it with the right slabs and careful installation and attention.

Block paving and brick driveways are spectacular when cared for correctly – they can require a little upkeep over the years – but maintenance is otherwise generally very straightforward. Do keep an eye out for those pesky weeds, however – as the most stubborn shrubs can cause cracking in even the sturdiest of driveway solutions.

Talk To Us

Block paving doesn’t have to be uniform, nor does it have to all line up in the same colour. With blocks, you can create miniature mosaics and patterns of your own choosing, or you can go even further left of field with a crazy paving design that’s as random as it sounds.

Crazy paving is something that’s never really gone away – and it can make for a great-looking and resilient driveway design. For some people, block paving may not have the durability or design appeal of a resin bound driveway option – but the choice, ultimately, is always going to be yours.

Tarmac Driveway Specification

Tarmac driveways are more common than you may believe – while this mix is generally used to coat our local road surfaces and to fill in potholes, it can also be used to help provide for a low-cost and durable option. There are plenty of reasons why tarmac may be at the top of your list. Visit our tarmacadam page to learn more about how this versatile surface can be used.

Contact Us

For one, it’s uniform – it’s easy to come by, too. Tarmac is easily laid and offers very little fuss – it’s a smooth drive and for the level of traffic it’s set to receive, you won’t be experiencing any horrible potholes or chipping that you may find on well-driven roads.

The tarmac driveway specification, however, can be a little boring. Some of the more outlandish domestic paving ideas out there make use of paving slabs, patterns or resin bound options – and while tarmac may have similar durability factors to that of a stone option, it can look a little too uniform or straightforward for some homes. It can really stick out, too! If durability is a factor, tarmac will be a good option to look into.

Pattern Imprinted Concrete

Lastly, let’s consider pattern imprinted concrete. Patterned concrete is mixed and laid as-is, meaning that once it all sets, it’ll form into a stunning new creation thanks to moulds. These moulds are pressed into the ground and are left to work their magic – it’s certainly a colourful and creative option for you to consider if you are mainly worried about cultivating a certain look for the run-up to your property.

Get in Touch

Moulds come in various styles and shapes, too, and this means you may even be able to achieve a completely bespoke look. Certainly, it’s one of many domestic driveways paving ideas that allows you to get a little bit creative.

In the durability stakes, perhaps resin and tarmac have it the best – but for sheer control overlook at feel, a patterned or paved option may be worth looking into. Resin-bound driveways, for our money, offer incredible durability, stunning, effortless looks, and simple maintenance – it’s an option that can be tailor-made and tailor-laid to your specifications. Your perfect driveway should always be laid at your final discretion, of course – and these are just a few great ideas to help you.

Suds Permeable Resin Bound Stone Footpath Paving

SUDS Permeable Resin Bound Stone Footpath Paving is also known as Resin Bound Gravel and offers a different option to surfaces both in commercial and domestic areas. Resin Bound Gravel is created in situ, and is created by mixing a natural stone aggregate with an extremely strong adhesive resin before being laid over an existing sub base. The mixture is then screeded to leave you with a new decorative, attractive and porous surface. We can complete the installation process for resin bound gravel paths and driveways at both domestic areas and commercial businesses. These porous surfaces are ideal for urban locations as they prevent water from building up on top of the paving. Due to the gaps between the stones, rain water can soak through into the ground instead of puddling or running off into other areas. Feel free to contact us if you’d like to talk about the costs of installing SuDS permeable resin bound stone footpath paving at your home or in another outdoor area.

Talk To Us

There are a number of possible sub bases that Resin Bound Stone could be laid upon. However we would recommend seamless open textured, porous surfaces such as macadam or concrete. The reasons behind this is that these would make the newly laid Resin Bound Gravel surface, SUDS compliant (Sustainable Urban Drainage System). This means the event of rainfall, water will pass through the system and be drip fed into the natural system below instead flowing directly into drainage systems and overloading them. Installing a Resin Bound Stone surface holds many positives it is easy on the eye, requires little or no maintenance as well as being highly durable, lasting around 12 years. We can create a range of different designs for each project so you will have a bespoke outdoor paving surface. A number of natural coloured stone aggregates are available so you can select a colour which matches any existing surfaces nearby. Projects suitable for Resin Bound Gravel/Stone:

  • Pathways, Walkways, Footpaths
  • Driveways
  • Pool/Hot Tub Surrounds
  • Tree Pits
  • Sporting Venues
  • Retirement Homes
  • Patios
  • Terraces
  • Schools

Resin Bound Gravel Manhole Covers

Stone paving is a popular surface type for domestic driveways because it is decorative, provides porous SuDS compliant properties, and is durable for use with cars and other vehicles. When creating a design and quote for this type of outdoor flooring, there are many factors that we need to take into account. Something which can often be overlooked during this process is the installation of specialist resin bound gravel manhole covers. We need to make sure that things like this are considered when offering a price for the work so it’s important that we are aware of anything that could affect the installation. Please contact our team if you are unsure about what information needs to be supplied in order for us to supply a quote for any surfacing work.

Drainage manholes can be found in housing areas as they provide access to underground piping systems which is vital if there is ever a problem that needs to be looked at. The manholes will usually be present wherever the underground pipes change direction or connect with other systems. When installing stone paving for a driveway, we offer specialist resin bound gravel manhole covers which maintain a seamless and attractive appearance while still allowing access to the manhole. During the installation process for this type of surface, we need to lay the stone and resin mixture up to an edge so that it stays in place. If there is no edge present, we will lay a specially designed raised metal edging around the perimeter of the chosen area to the required depth. For access onto a driveway we will create a chase cut into the existing tarmac or concrete base and then grade down the resin bound stone surface to create a slight slope. This allows cars to easily drive onto the surface and also prevents a trip hazard.

Find Out More

Installing Stone Paving Manhole Cover

When installing a manhole cover for a resin bound gravel surface, we also need to put a metal edge around the manhole that matches the depth of the rest of the surface to ensure it is completely smooth and seamless. This will be done with a metal square or rectangle which is installed and secured with cement into a cut square around the edge of the manhole. Once this edging has been put into place, a removable metal tray at the same depth will be screwed into place on top of the first edging piece. This tray will then be filled with the same resin bound stone mixture as the rest of the surface. Once this is done and the stone paving has been installed to the rest of the driveway area, only the metal square around the edge of the manhole cover will be visible.

By using specialist resin bound gravel manhole covers for domestic driveways, we are able to maintain the decorative appearance throughout the whole area, while still allowing access to the manhole is maintenance work is needed. This process is also done for manhole covers in children’s wetpour playgrounds to ensure a smooth and continuous appearance across the whole surface.

The resin bound stone specification provides many benefits for domestic driveways and public facilities as it can be designed to suit different colour preferences, is porous to allow fast water drainage, and can withstand regular use from cars and pedestrians. If you are thinking about having this type of paving installed, or you’d like to find out more about resin bound gravel manhole covers, please complete our contact form to get some more advice. We’ll send you some product sheets, talk through the costs and offer a bespoke quote for your project.

Commercial Resin Bound Gravel Surfacing Case Study

This week, our team visited Preston to complete an installation of resin bound gravel for Jaguar Land Rover. They were looking to have the surfacing installed to create a walkway around the perimeter of their car showroom.

The paving specification creates a decorative and porous finish which aids drainage and helps to prevent flooding. It’s popular for domestic driveways and commercial projects like this one. You will often find it in parks, visitor centres, outdoor attractions and many other places.

Talk To Us

Installing the Paving

We began by mixing the chosen coloured stone with resin on-site in our mixer. The client decided to have the beige colour as they felt it would suit the design they wanted. This is a popular colour of stone which we have installed on many previous projects. It’s commonly chosen for decorative outdoor pathways and domestic drives.

Once the mixture was fully combined, we began laying it out onto the desired area around the outside of the showroom. The surfacing was laid onto a prepared sub-base, ensuring a smooth and even finish. Our installers poured the stones and resin onto the base and hand trowelled it to achieve the correct depth. They worked through the whole area a small bit at a time until the whole walkway as covered.

After this part of the process is complete, the flooring needs to be left to cure and set properly. We would advise waiting 24 hours before walking or driving vehicles over this type of surface. We also offer this product for domestic driveways, visit this post to find more driveway ideas.

Finished Commercial Resin Bound Stone

The end result at JLR in Preston was an attractive and functional walkway which the client was very happy with. See a video of the work being completed here:

Resin Bound Rubber Crumb Sports Underlay Shockpad

Resin bound rubber crumb sports underlay shockpad is designed to act as a shock layer to go between the sub base used and the All Weather Sports carpet that has been used. The SBR rubber shockpad is made by mixing SBR rubber with a PU Polyurethane binder and machine laid onto the appropriate sub base. Benefits of Commercial Resin Bound Paving

There are numerous benefits to using commercial resin bound paving for your business or public building needs. The most obvious of these is that resin bound paving looks great.

You can install it in a variety of colours and styles. What’s more, it’s flexible to your needs. Unlike concrete and macadam, it’s much more versatile, making it the perfect asset to any bespoke paving or custom surfacing design project.

People will also love resin bound gravel for the porous qualities. With traditional outdoor surfacing, you are at risk of water pooling and damage.

Water is certainly a big factor in causing this type of damage. However, with a porous resin bound system, you can be sure that there’s zero chance of water pooling on the surface.

Decorative Paving Designs

Another great reason for choosing resin bound gravel for commercial purposes is for the decorative paving options available.

If you want to create a bright, cheerful look for a school playground, for example, you might choose resin bound gravel for its different possibilities.

Decorative paving is also a great choice for many public buildings. If you want your business or premises to stand out from the pack in the best way, why not go fully decorative? It’s a great idea to think about using decorative surfacing if you want to create the best first impressions.

Of course, as a business owner, the first thing you are going to want to do is make those first impressions count!

Why go with the flock and choose paving designs that are well-worn and are – quite frankly – boring? Dare to be different. Let us know what you are looking for from your commercial surfacing and paving, and we will be sure to set up a bespoke plan of action.

Porous Stone Surfacing for Public Areas

Porous stone surfacing for public areas should, in our opinion, become a matter of absolute need, not a choice. Non-porous stone can cause water to pool and flood easily. When this happens, material such as stone and concrete can start to degrade.

Therefore, with commercial resin bound gravel, you have immediate protection against water and other potential weather damage. It is perfect for public areas in the name of durability as well as in the name of safety. It’s not just ideal for residential or everyday business design use. It’s a safe, bright and cost-effective option for years to come.
