Recessed Manhole Covers

It is a well known fact that Playground surfacing are designed to protect children, however sometimes within play areas you may come across a manhole that needs to be accessed for drainage. Recessed Manhole Covers come in a selection of sizes and as part of our package we can install recessed manhole covers that is infilled with safety surfacing.

In addition, surfaces such as resin bound gravel may also require recessed manhole covers that sit flat on the paving and provide easy and safe access to the man hole. Here is an image of one we installed to a resin surface within the UK:

As told by Wikipedia: “Manhole covers are often made out of cast iron, concrete or a combination of the two. This makes them inexpensive, strong, and heavy, usually weighing more than 50 KG (110lb). The weight helps to keep them in place, and makes it difficult for unauthorised people without suitable tools to remove them.”

Here at Soft Surfaces, we can ensure that our recessed manhole covers across all surfaces are:

  • Durable
  • Affordable
  • Effective
  • Secure
  • Safe

The cost of us installing these really does depend on many factors including the location of your surface, the surface type itself and the size of the cover that you’re looking for. It’s worth contacting us via our contact form if you are interested regarding the costs of these covers.

History of Manhole Covers

As soon as people began to live in cities the problem of what to do with human waste became an issue. The first cities were built along great rivers that served as open sewers. This was hardly satisfactory due to the periodic plagues that resulted from too much human waste in close contact with people.

Talk To Us

Roman civil engineers solved this problem with the invention of the underground sewer. The Roman sewers, dug by hand and lined with brick, collected a city’s waste and deposited it far downstream. The Romans constructed access ways to these sewers to allow for periodic cleaning. The stone manhole covers that capped these access ways can still be seen in the old Roman City of Jerash in Jordan.

It would be quite a while until modern civilization rose to the level of the Romans. Construction began on the Chicago sewer system in 1856. New York City had only 200 mi (320 km) of sewer line laid by 1870, compared to 6,200 mi (10,000 km) today. The first manholes with covers were probably constructed in the early nineteenth century, not for sewers but for water or town gas pipelines. None of the covers for these manholes are known to survive to the present.

Elastic Shockpad Layer

Elastic insitu shockpad layers are installed under the installation of artificial grass on sports pitches. An elastic shockpad is a resilient layer between the sub-base construction and the sports synthetic surface. This layer is used to provide a degree of comfort to players and cushioning the impact on joints/muscles. As well as the player’s benefits then it also generally improves the playing characteristics for the sports and prolongs the life of the synthetic turf sports pitch.

Get in Touch

Sports Pitch Shockpads

There are two types of elastic shockpads typically installed beneath sports synthetic surfacing. These are either in situ rubber shockpad or prefabricated sports pitch shockpads. The one chosen for a project depends on many factors. This can include the surface we are installing, what it will be used for and also the area size. Both of these elastic base surfaces can be installed onto a dynamic sub-base or engineered sub base and below is a photo of an in situ rubber shock pad recently installed.

Elastic Shockpad Layer

The photo shows the rubber shockpad which is made up of SBR rubber crumb and binder mixed on-site. It can be installed to any depth but generally is installed at 15mm-25mm depth. We install many sports pitches with these shock-absorbing base layers at clubs and schools. The rubber helps to absorb impact making for a more comfortable playing experience. It is a lot softer on joints when running around the pitch compared with a hard tarmac base.

Outdoor Sport Surface Installers

Our team have completed many projects throughout the UK for various clients. We specialise in the installation of sports facilities and recreational areas. Many of our synthetic turf products require a rubber shockpad underneath for safety and better comfort for players. If a 3G pitch is going to be used for playing rugby, you need to have a shock-absorbent layer for safety. Other services that we commonly offer include:

  • Construction of synthetic football pitches
  • Installing multi-use games areas
  • Maintenance of sporting facilities
  • Replacement of existing surfaces

Below you can see a video for a project we carried out replacing the synthetic sand filled sports turf. We did this with a 3G artificial grass surface on top of a newly installed in situ rubber shockpad:

Our team can provide these products along with the full construction of a range of outdoor sports surfaces throughout the UK. The designs are customisable to suit various budgets and sizing requirements for each client. Over the years we have worked with several schools, colleges and local councils to create these facilities. We are committed to providing safe and long-lasting sports flooring for a range of uses and have carried out many successful projects.

If you require any more information about shockpads like case studies, product sheets etc then please contact us. We are able to provide quotes for a range of projects if you need an idea of prices. You can get in touch through the contact form on this page and our experts will be happy to help.

Pathway Surfacing

When installing pathway surfacing for outdoor areas it’s important to consider the different options that are available to ensure you choose a surface type with the right look and functionality for its purpose. We can create designs and install flooring for walkways at domestic homes, gardens, commercial buildings, schools and public parks to create durable and decorative outdoor surfaces which look great and last a long time.

Talk To Us

Decorative Walkway Surfaces

Each of the decorative walkway surfaces we install can come in a bespoke design and a range of colour options. This allows you to have a customised pathway surface which fits with any existing design themes. Resin-bound and resin-bonded gravel can each come in a range of natural stone colours as well as more vibrant colour options to be used in recreational areas for children.

The rubber mulch specification is also extremely versatile and may be specified in a number of natural colours as this is a common choice for use with play equipment such as timber activity trails and climbing frames. Tarmacadam pathway surfacing is available in various designs. We can apply colourful paint to enhance slip resistance and create a more interesting appearance for decorative walkway surfaces.

We offer assistance on all of the various surfacing types we specialise in for outdoor walkways. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Our experienced staff will be able to give advice with regards to path ideas, designs, prices, quotes and installation. Simply fill in our contact form today if you’d like more information.

Depending on the amount of use your pathway surfacing is going to get and the appearance you want it to have, there are several different types of paths you can choose from including:

  • Resin Bound Gravel – This is a popular option for public and garden paths as it has a decorative appearance and can come in a range of coloured designs. The resin bound stone specification is made using natural gravel aggregate which is combined with resin and installed onto a concrete or macadam sub base. Our installers then had trowel the mixture to leave a smooth and durable finish which is porous to comply with sustainable urban drainage systems.
  • Resin Bonded Gravel – A scatter system where resin is applied to the existing macadam or concrete surface and the chosen stone aggregate is scattered on top of it to leave the appearance of a loose gravel path but with much fewer maintenance requirements.
  • Rubber Mulch – This specification is perfect for paths in play areas and parks. It is made up of bonded rubber shred which can be applied to most existing surface to provide impact absorption and to cover up muddy grass patches.
  • Rhino Pave – A mixture of stone and rubber which creates a flexible pathway surface for use in woodland areas as it may be laid onto most existing outdoor areas without the need for heavy groundworks to prevent disturbance to tree roots and vegetation.
  • Tarmacadam – Many clients choose this specification for a variety of uses but it provides a durable and long lasting surface for pathways which can withstand heavy pedestrian traffic without needing a lot of regular maintenance.

We offer professional advice with regards to all aspects of pathway surfacing including design, construction and costs. Please feel free to fill in our enquiry form and get in touch with us today for a free quote.

Resin Gravel Path

There are two types resin paths that we may install. The first resin gravel path is resin-bound and the second is resin-bonded. Both of these surfaces are a decorative surfacing type and are great for pathways. These surfaces are available in a number of different colours including Brittany Bronze, Autumn Gold and Red Granite.

The main difference between resin-bound and resin-bonded is that resin bound is a smooth, permeable finish whereas resin bonded is not. We mix the stones and resin together prior to the installation and then screed the mixture across the surfacing. This ensures that the resin bound surfacing is laid smoothly. During the installation of resin bonded pathway surfacing, we’ll install the resin first and then add the stones using a scatter system.

We lay the resin gravel paths in a number of different areas including parks, schools and public places. Our team offer great prices for resin-bound and resin-bonded gravel. We will be more than happy to talk you through the different pathway options available.

Rubber Outdoor Pathway

If you would like to install a rubber outdoor pathway, we have two different options available for you. You could choose to install EPDM wetpour or rubber mulch. Wet pour is ideal for areas that require colourful pathways or plain black paths. Rubber mulch is best for more natural areas like woodlands spaces and parks. Both of these surface types are permeable, which means water can drain through.

From this video you can see the installation of an EPDM wet pour pathway. Our team carry out all of our installations to a top standard. You won’t find a better price on a like for like quote.

Rhino Pave Paths

Another more natural surfacing type that we install for pathways is rhino paving. Rhino pave paths are a permeable surface type that works well in woodlands areas and parks. There are different surface options available and we may alter specifications and designs to meet your individual needs and requirements.

Get in Touch

The rhino pave spec involved mixing rubber, stone and binder. This creates a mixture that is flexible and strong creating a comfortable surface underfoot. This makes the surfacing great for pathways that receive regular use.

Macadam Path Specification

The last surface option that we can offer for pathways is tarmac. The macadam path specification is standard tarmac which we can install in numerous colours. Macadam is also a porous paving option which means that the surface will not puddle in wet weather conditions. We can also install tarmacadam play surfaces using the same material.

Get In Touch

If you have any question about any of the pathway surfaces we install, please get in touch with our team. Simply use the contact form provided and we will get back to you right away. We aim to provide the very best rates and will not be beaten on price for a like for like quote.

Rhino Pave Surfacing

Many outdoor areas in the UK can have rhino pave surfacing installed to create pathways and walkways which offer a safe and attractive way of navigating places like parks, schools and woodland activity trails. The specification for this type of surface consists of rubber granules and stone which are mixed together with resin to create continuous flooring for a range of uses.

Contact Our Team

Porous Rhino Pave Surfaces

These porous rhino pave surfaces are ideal for a range of uses because they allow water to drain through them quickly. This makes the specification ideal as an all weather surface. The permeable properties are achieved because this stone and rubber surfacing is made up of different granules which fit together but have gaps between them, therefore allowing efficient water drainage and preventing dirt from getting stuck within the surface.

Depending upon the amount of use and the maintenance you apply for rhino pave surfacing; it’s a durable and long lasting paving option which is suitable for pedestrians, vehicles, wheelchairs and pushchairs for access routes and paths. There are low maintenance and do not require too much cleaning once the initial installation is complete. If you’d like any further information about designs and costs for porous rhino-pave surfacing please feel free to contact us.

We have many years of experience in working on a range of decorative surfacing projects. Our helpful team will be happy to offer you advice regarding the best surface type for your outdoor area. Another popular specification for these spaces is resin bound paving which is a hard stone design. Make sure you send us over your details, a post code, area size and a brief description of the work that you need. Therefore we can offer you an accurate quote for the job.

The rhino-pave surfacing is commonly used for installing outdoor paths as we can install it on top of most existing surfaces. There is usually no need for extensive groundworks or excavating into the soil. This is why it’s a popular choice in woodland areas with a lot of trees as it eliminates the risk of harming tree and plant roots through digging into the ground. Another benefit of this versatile paving option is that it provides slip resistance and impact absorption, as well as being non toxic. This makes it a safe surface for children and pets to play on in domestic gardens, parks or other recreational areas.

Please get in touch with one of our professional advisers if you need some help with regards to designs and costs of this stone and rubber paving system. All you need to do is fill in the contact form on this page then we shall get back to you with all the information.

What is Rhino Pave Used For?

Rhino-pave can be used for a variety of different things depending on your individual needs. We generate this flooring by integrating rubberised granules with all-natural stone simply by using a binder; as a result the surfacing is flexible and tough. This helps make certain that the flooring is ideal for a vast range of different outdoor uses, including trim trails, routes and children’s play areas. The rhino-pave product is great for outdoor locations such as recreational parks, pathways and many more.

If you would like more information regarding the uses of rhino-pave surfacing, please get in touch with our team. Just complete the contact form on this page and let us know what you need. A member of our staff will get back to you as soon as possible with all the details you require.

Advantages of Rhino Paving

There are a number of advantages of rhino paving. One of the biggest advantages is that it’s a permeable paving type. Therefore the water can drain through the surface easily. Having porous paving installed means the area will not flood or become waterlogged and slippery for users.

The rubber within the surface creates comfort whilst the stone guarantees the facility is able to withstand plenty of use. There are a number of colours and depths available, which enable our clients to modify the specification to meet their individual requirements.

Rhino Pave Servicing

We provide you with top quality services when installing the rhino paving to make sure that you get the most out of your facility. The most important services that we offer made to lengthen the product’s life are cleaning and routine maintenance. Routine maintenance is necessary for this particular surface type as it’s made to let water drain through. We can provide rhino pave servicing if necessary, however, we also recommend you regularly clean your surface.

If proactive care doesn’t occur the holes which permit the water to go through may become blocked with pollutants. This can cause difficulties such as water damage and a slippery surface. You should deal with these problems as quickly as possible to prevent further issues. We can also provide a repair service if your facility has become damaged due to lack of maintenance or constant use.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you an Outdoor Wetpour Surfacing Install in Leicester.

So for this job we were emailed by the school that own this area, and wanted to create an outdoor playground that was safe for children to be using.

We discussed wetpour surfacing with them, and it’s many benefits as a play area flooring option. Before we knew it, we were on site installing the bespoke works.

So wetpour surfaces are widely believed to be the best option for outdoor playgrounds here in the UK, as they are made up of a spongy rubber compound.

This compound means that the flooring is great at absorbing trips and falls commonly seen during playtime, and in turn meets the critical fall height safety requirements needed for UK play areas.

As well as this, wetpour surfaces are a wonderful choice for places like schools, nurseries, universities and parks as they are perfectly suited to the outdoors. This is because it’s rubber qualities actually make the surfacing porous, able to simply absorb the rain that may effect other surface types.

Finally, for those wanting a playground they can customise, wetpour is the go to. You can have this fitted in basically any colour choices you like, and custom graphics can be fitted to the surface to help children learn during play too. This is another reason why so many opt for wetpour.

We’ve been installing and maintaining wetpour surfaces across the entire country for over 20 years now, and we’re happy to work on jobs of all shapes and sizes, so please do get in touch if you’re interested.

You can see from these images that the final job has been finished, and looks stunning in the multicoloured design. The school themselves were super happy with the work.

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Rubber Wetpour Play Area Flooring in Bradford.

So this school came to us wanting to have a custom play area surfacing fitted that enhanced the appearance of the area whilst making certain that the surface was as safe as possible for their pupils to be using. We broke down what we could offer for them, and we were soon on site installing.

With this job we ended up agreeing that EPDM rubber wetpour would be the best flooring type to fit their play area. This surface itself is actually the most popular of the options we provide, and here’s why:

To begin with, wetpour is made up of a spongy rubber compound that acts as a superb safety surface for children. It’s because of this rubber build-up that wetpour meets the critical fall height standards needed for UK playgrounds, and therefore makes it one of, if not the safest surface in the market.

Next, wetpour is the best option for those looking for something with endless design possibilities, as here at Soft Surfaces we can install wetpour in basically any colour combination and pattern you’d like. We can also fit bespoke graphics such as educational games, shapes, logos and more to the surface as part of the installation too!

Finally, the last big benefit of opting for EPDM rubber wetpour for your play area is that it’s a porous system, and because of this water is just absorbed by the wetpour during our rainy months. This makes it the perfect outdoor playground surface for our country.

We’re proud to have been installing and maintaining wetpour for over 2 decades now, so please do get in touch regardless of the size of the works.

These images now show the job fully completed and looks really stunning in their multicoloured design with various graphics fitted throughout. The school really love their new playground.

Despite being a company that does work nationwide, we’ve worked on a lot of sites in the Bradford area and now rank in Google for these terms:

  • Playground Safety Surfaces Bradford
  • Bradford Rubber Play Area Flooring
  • EPDM Rubber Wetpour Experts Bradford
  • Nursery School Surfacing in Bradford

Resin Bound Paving Maintenance

Stone surfaces for driveways and paths have become increasingly popular over the past couple years and it’s important to carry out resin bound paving maintenance for these outdoor areas. This is because it maintains the functionality and appearance of the flooring for as long as possible. The resin-bound gravel specification is perfect for outdoor facilities. This is because of the stylish stone design and the ease of installing the product.

Maintaining Resin Bound Stone

Once the resin-bound gravel stone has been installed, it’s incredibly important to take good care of your facility. Maintaining resin bound stone is easy and offers amazing results. We offer specialist cleaning and maintenance services to ensure that your facility will be in the best possible condition all year round

This is particularly important for pathways in public areas such as recreational playgrounds and visitor attractions. The product is completely porous which is one of the main benefits of installing resin-bound gravel. The porosity of this specification allows for water to pass straight through it, not only making it perfect for driveways as it can reduce flooding, but tree surrounds and pool surrounds.

However without careful resin bound paving maintenance, your facility could begin to lose the porosity it originally had. A thorough jet wash of your surface can remove any small contaminations that could be causing issues with drainage. This will also ensure that the resin bound driveway, path, car park or pool surround will remain clean and good looking.

Each client can tailor the appearance and design, ensuring that they have the perfect outdoor surface. This includes the stone size and if they would like any vibrant designs to be installed into the work. The resin-bound stone installation process is dynamic, allowing for different shapes and sizes to be easily installed into the flooring for a bespoke look.

We have years of experience in the surfacing industry and we carry out installations and maintenance services at great prices. All of our team members are fully trained to know what needs to be done to keep the resin-bound paving in good condition. If you would like details on the maintenance services, please get in touch now using the contact form provided.

Resin Bound Gravel Cleaning

When going out to different companies for resin bound gravel cleaning, it’s essential that you make sure they have the necessary accreditations and certifications to carry out the works to a high standard. We pride ourselves on the quality of work that we carry out and we ensure that our range of services will give clients the best value for their budget. Previous projects we have completed include pathways at golf clubs, domestic driveways and commercial car parks and each job is tailored to the individual client.

Resin-bound gravel cleaning and maintenance is a great way of stopping any long term damages to your facility arising, however, overtime damages are inevitable. This is why we also offer a repair service to rectify any problems such as cracks on the surface. If any damages happen to the paving, leading to bumps and uneven surfaces we can come out to site and screed more resin bonded mixture over the affected area.

Proactive resin bound paving maintenance is the best possible way of ensuring that the quality of your decorative gravel surface. It also helps keep it in the best condition for the duration of its product life. However to ensure that the facility goes back to its former condition after having damages, make sure that you have thorough reactive maintenance work done by a professional. We offer advice with regards to quotes and cost estimates for resin bound paving maintenance. Please feel free to contact us via our enquiry form.

Resin Driveways Maintenance

Resin driveways maintenance means that you are able to extend the life span of your bound gravel and make sure it’s safe to use. If you wait for the surfacing to become slippery prior to starting the maintenance plan, the flooring may become unsafe. Therefore we advise starting with frequent servicing on your surface immediately.

To keep the resin-bound stone surfacing nice and clean, we advise regular maintenance to take away leaves or dirt. This helps the surfacing to maintain its porosity and make certain liquids drains out as effectively as possible. To dispose of any weeds on your driveway, you can apply a weed killer. It’s essential not to use anything oil based as this could damage the surface.

A gentle pressure spray is enough to stop the growth of contaminants. You can use lukewarm water with a washing liquid to clean the surface. However you shouldn’t use boiling hot water as this could cause damage to the paving. You can remove snow and ice from the resin-bound floor utilising a light bristled sweep. Alternatively you could use a rubberised scraper in order to prevent damage.

The spec of resin-bound stone can be put in to any sort of shape or size simply because the stones and binder are mixed on site. We normally install the stone on a macadam or solid sub-base foundation for optimum steadiness and resilience.

Check out this video below which shows an installation project for this kind of surfacing in Stratford-Upon-Avon:

The Daily Mile™ Initiative

Elaine Wyllie developed The Daily Mile initiative, back in 2012, whilst teaching at St Ninian’s Primary School.

Elaine had the aim to get pupils fitter by exercising for 15 minutes per day.

After one month Elaine Wyllie had seen a huge improvement in behaviour, concentration and fitness.

Exercise is a great way to tackle obesity and research is being carried out to determine cognitive and emotional benefits.

How much does a daily mile track cost?

The costs of a daily mile track are £80 per metre.

The costs of £80 per m2 can vary depending on the surface, existing ground conditions and area size.

The prices of daily mile tracks in schools can be adapted to fit your budget.

Daily Mile Track Funding

Daily Mile Track funding can be provided to schools if the facility can be used by the wider community.

The Daily Mile Foundation is a registered charity and does not have available funding to donate to schools.

It is important to note that a running track or all-weather surface is not necessary for The Daily Mile programme, but some schools will wish to install one using their own funding opportunities.

Summary

Our daily mile tracks have been designed to suit all schools budgets and can be installed into any shape to suit a school struggling for space.
