Outdoor Sports Surfacing Slip Tester Insitu Testing

Throughout the UK many outdoor sports areas are very slippery and this is mainly due to the fact of moss / algae growing on the flooring which gives a waxy top layer that is slippy and this can be very dangerous to the players on the tennis courts, basketball courts, netball pitches and MUGA facilities.

It is always paramount to make sure all sporting facilities achieve maximum performances from their surfacing but also keep a safe floor for the children, visitors and players. It is a duty of every school, leisure centre, college, university or sports club to take reasonable steps to ensure the players, kids and children can enjoy safe playing characteristics and measuring any health and safety issues.

According to the HSE the results show that one in three non-fatal major injuries come from slips, falls and trips in the UK and it only takes a fraction of a second to slip with consequences being broken bones or other critical injuries. With the current climate you have to ask yourself would you like to be the victim of someone slipping on your surfacing area and them taking you to court to be sued.

The recommendation for this is obviously to take all measures available to reduce risk of slippage and slipping. These measures would include the following items :

(1) Making sure the flooring is kept clean by water jetting, pressure cleaning and free from moss, algal squidge, algae and contamination

(2) Making sure you carry out a yearly BS7976 pendulum test to make sure the slip resistance is safe for the players

(3) If the test shows to be outside the parameters set out by HSE, ITF or sports accreditation level to take measure like applying a new anti slip coating paint or maintenance rejuvenation

Many sports governing bodies like the ITF for tennis courts have set out standards that need to be met for full safety to the floors and to keep performance playing characteristics to their maximum. If you would like to check details on the slip resistance like the TRRL measures set out for sports use then please contact us and we will explain more in detail.

If you are still unconcerned about what measures could be taken against you in court then you might want to know it is actually LAW and FACT that you have a duty of diligence to reduce chance of injury so if you have documentation to show you have maintained the surfacing to the multi use games areas or sports pitches with a yearly test result then this will stand you up in good stead with the judges however if a children, player or visitor decides to proceed with court actions and you have taken no measures with testing the surfaces then this could leave you wide open to being sued in court.

Talk To Us

The slip tester is under 1k to have carried out and not only does it come with a report it also comes with recommendations and consultancy to how these works are best to be rectified whether it is resurfacing, rejuvenation, just a simple jet wash clean or applying a new colour coating anti slip paint. Please fill in the contact form for further details or phone our head office on 01625 445760.

Benefits of Artificial Clay Tennis Court Surfacing

ClayCourt Pro is the premium artificial clay tennis court surface specification with all the playing characteristics of natural clay but without all the heavy and costly maintenance requirements.

Get in Touch

The system used is ITF approved category 2 medium/slow pace. So what are the advantages of ClayCourt Pro artificial clay tennis courts?

  • Looks like natural clay tennis court surfaces with the same colour infill used and ball marks visible making it aesthetically appealing on the eye.
  • Slides like natural clay surfacing which is crucial as part of the design in this innovative ClayCourt Pro product because creating the perfect sliding specification is paramount to clay surfaces.
  • Plays like natural clay tennis courts as it provides the surface speed, bounce and player comfort tennis players expect from a clay tennis surface.
  • ITF category 2 endorsed artificial clay tennis court surface specification stimulates natural clay and has been tested to meet the ITF classified court pace 2 medium/slow.
  • An unbound surface resulting in less muscle stress which is great for tennis players because it reduces the risk of injuries which are linked with hard-surfaced courts.
  • Low maintenance surfacing which is key as it makes the sustainability of the courts easier and helps to lower the overall costs of running the facility.
  • All weather surface and the porous system prevents the limitations that cushioned acrylic surfaces, natural clay surfacing or natural grass with varying climate conditions. The ClayCourt Pro has been designed to not compact and its rapid drainage qualities allow play to commence during all weather conditions without the surface being affected.
  • A consistent year-round playing surface as the artificial clay tennis court material is made up of two components which are synthetic carpet and sand infill.
  • Suitability for all indoor tennis requirements as during the design process of the premium ClayCourt Pro we had to consider both indoor and outdoor usage so as the specification is sand infilled then it does not need to be watered and unlike the sliding on natural clay this specification creates no dust from the players sliding.
  • Line markings are inlaid to the artificial clay tennis courts making this element maintenance free and therefore saving tennis clubs on the heavy maintenance costs compared to natural clay surfacing.
  • No watering and no dust is a big advantage because this eliminates the high irrigation costs of regularly having the tennis courts watered to enable first class playability. As the synthetic clay courts are sand infilled this means the no dust element is great for indoor clubs.
Tennis Court Repair Painting Maintenance

Historically clay tennis courts have been referred to as very expensive on the running costs and require extensive maintenance procedures compared to other tennis court surfacing specifications to enable first-class play. However the ClayCourt Pro innovative artificial clay tennis court specification now gives all clubs a totally different angle. This is because clay surfacing is a premium tennis flooring option and your club can’t afford not to have one with this statistic below transforming your players into champions:-

88 percent – The percent of top 10 players who learned to play on clay

Compared to…

12 percent – The percentage of top 10 players who learned to play on hard court

Now we have explained the advantages of artificial clay tennis courts you could ask the question why ClayCourt Pro as opposed to other specifications? Well ClayCourt Pro has been designed over a number of years and the synthetic carpet is a curly yarn which we feel is a premium system as it allows the sand to be encapsulated within the fibres, this adds stability and accurate levels to the overall playing surface.

Find Out More

The sand infill used is terracotta colour to match natural clay and this is produced by an intense heating and baking process which bakes the sand grains to replicate the accurate colour. This process is much higher quality than colour coating because it ensures the retention of its colour and gives great UV stability for the finished product.

Baking the sand to give the brightly coloured appearance is a much better method than dying it as no colour will come off and permanently stain clothes which can often happen with the dyed sand. The sand specification is also carefully selected as it offers a load bearing capability, provides slip resistance and the shape of the sand grains aids drainage values helping the surface to drain rapidly so the all-weather clay courts are playable all year round.

Acrylic Sports Court Spraying Anti Slip Paint Surface

Acrylic Sports Court Spraying Anti Slip Paint Surface is installed onto macadam type 1 and type 2 MUGAs throughout the UK. The acrylic anti slip paint is available is a selection of colours and the most common are red, blue and green. The coatings are applied by our specialist team, and we aim to make the process as efficient and cost effective as possible for you.

Our team can apply these spray coatings to various sports facilities. We have worked at many leisure centres, schools and colleges to improve the appearance and functionality of sports courts. Adding the non slip coat improves grip and makes it safer for players running around on the surface. It also brightens up the facility as we offer a selection of colours for you to choose from. You could have a single colour or opt for a two tone design depending on your preference.

Ball Courts

The ball courts, which are often used for sports such as Basketball, Tennis and Football, can be built to suit almost any size, specification and budget, have these coatings applied to help them achieve TRRL ratings of 60 and 75. Their macadam surface which does not have the anti-slip coating applied is known as a Type 1 MUGA. You can also have a Synthetic All Weather Artificial Grass surface and an EPDM: Polymeric Surface MUGA. These types of acrylic anti-slip coatings and MUGA surfacing is often found in building specifications – Q26 and many of these surfaces have game line markings installed with the same type of anti-slip coatings.

MUGA Court Anti Slip Paint

One of the most common sporting facilities which we install this paint is a MUGA court surface. This is also known as a multi-use games area as you can play a number of sports in the same place. As well as spraying the whole area in an acrylic sports court paint in the colour of your choice, we also apply line-markings. These can be done for whichever sports you want to play, the ones we generally apply will be:

  • Tennis
  • Netball
  • Basketball
  • Football

The multi-use games area is an ideal sports court where space is limited for the children and kids to play. In the UK many old tennis courts are being refurbished into these multi-use facilities. People do this to make the most out of the sports facility as it can be used much more. Often these will have sport rebound fencing to the perimeter with recessed goals and basketball hoops.

Applying the Acrylic Coating

The acrylic sports colour coating is applied by an airless spray in two coats. We apply it in different directions to get the whole court surface covered completely. After several years a flash coat or a resurfacing can be applied to make these like new again. We offer a range of sports facility maintenance services to help with this if you require a repair.

Take a look at the video below to see one of our projects where our team painted a sports court. The existing facility was a dull tarmac surface with fading line-markings. We painted over the whole area in vibrant orange colour and added white and yellow line markings for different sports.

As you can see the whole area was transformed and now has a much more exciting look. It also functions better as a sporting facility as the non-slip paint adds grip and creates better traction.
If you have any questions about these services don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We have worked around the UK with various clients to complete this work.

MUGA Fencing

MUGA fencing…

Twin Bar Rebound Weldmesh Ball Stop MUGA Fencing

Lots of modern sports surface facilities have installed sports fencing, to help create a secure sports facility. These modern MUGA Multi Use Games Area facilities often have a standard Twin Bar Weldmesh Fence installed. This fencing, which is a 3.0m high x 2.50m wide has a sandwich twin bar panel which compiles of 6.0mm vertical wires which is trapped or sandwiched by 8mm horizontal wires.

However, this ballstop fencing system can also be manufactured, specified and designed to suit most areas. 4.0m & 5.0m high fencing can be achieved and fencing can also have super rebound panels installed along the bottom 1.2m, to strengthen the area of fence where it comes under more stress from ball damage. Single and double leaf gates can be installed into most fencing systems, along with recessed goals. These systems will not alter the structural strength of the system.

Twin Bar Panel Ball Court Fences

MUGA Twin Bar Panel fencing is an attractive option for any sporting project which requires a high quality perimeter fence. A standard specification for this Twin bar would be a 3.0m high fence to the Multi Use Games Area perimeter, consisting of a 3.0m high x 2.50 wide standard Twin Bar Panel, in a single lift on RHS posts using clamp bars and anti tamper fasteners. Standard Twin Bar panels comprise of 6mm vertical wires sandwiched by twin 8mm horizontals to form a 200x50mm mesh to the complete height of the panel.

Soft Surfaces are a contractor who can provide you with a quotation, design and installation of this quality sports surfacing fence. Double leaf and Single leaf gates can also be installed into the Twin Bar Panel MUGA fence, along with football goal recesses which makes for a perfect Multi Use Games Area fencing solution. You can upgrade and replace existing ball court fences, whilst keeping the same specification and structural strength.

Roll Form Welded Mesh Fences for Multi Use Games Areas

Roll Form welded Multi Use Games Area Fencing, is a popular fencing system that is perfect for MUGA’S and Ball Courts, comes in various specifications and is very strong due to its steel construction.

Laid around the perimeter of the MUGA, the design of the fence affects the cost of the proposed system. You can have the fence in a number of different heights and the system can be made reinforced or stronger across the bottom to protect against ball damage.

Roll Form Welded Mesh Fencing is also known as Ball Stop fencing. There are a number of contractors and installers who can install, upgrade and replace existing Roll Form Welded Mesh Fencing when it has been damaged during play or vandalism.

A typical specification for this product is a 3.0m high fence, laid around the Multi Use Games Area, consisting of a double lift of 50x50x3.50 / 3.0mm galvanised and plastic coated green roll form welded mesh secured to high tension line wires with steel clips.

The fencing is put into concrete posts in 3.0m centres. You can have Roll Form Welded Fencing on MUGA’s which include sports such as Basketball, Netball and Tennis. The fencing can be completed with goal recesses and basketball hoops.

Single and double leaf gates can be added, along with timber kickboards to the bottom of the fence to allow for a true rebound of certain sport balls, such as hockey.

Soft Surfaces Ltd is a sports contractor who specialise in these types of systems. Budget / funding advice, costing information and quotations can all be catered for, along with the full construction of the fencing. Please visit our website or call us on 01625 445760

Padel Court Surfaces

Soft Surfaces Ltd are specialist Padel tennis court construction contractors within the UK. We can offer expert advice when it comes to the installation of Padel tennis courts. We offer a variety of surfaces all with the essential performance characteristic of a porous flooring material. This allows for water to pass through the surface making it an all-weather Padel tennis court surface.

You can choose to have your Padel tennis court constructed in artificial grass. This has the great benefit of being more comfortable underfoot for the players. Therefore it reduces the chances of getting any shock or impact injuries on your joints. One of the alternatives to having artificial grass surfacing is to get your Padel tennis court construction contractor to install the court using a porous macadam surfacing.

These macadam Padel tennis courts are covered with a polyurethane anti-slip paint coating. This helps reduce the chances of serious falls or accidents from a slippery surface. The aggregate the polyurethane coating adds to the Padel court help to increase friction. Similarly to the macadam Padel tennis court, building a Padel court in polymeric rubber also has the advantage of the anti-slip paint coating. With each of these surfaces, you can choose from a variety of different colours to personalize the courts.

Playing Padel Tennis

Padel tennis is rapidly growing and will soon be a huge recreational sport in the UK. Are you a school, leisure centre or sports club looking to bring something new to your customers or trying to attract new people? Building a Padel tennis court through a specialist contractor is the way to go.

00:08 So here is some photos now of the surface prior to us actually going out to do works on it. As you can see, it’s quite badly damaged, and many people assume that this needs a resurface; however, a cleaning and painting often does suffice.

00:27 You can see some more photos of that there. It looks really, really great. We’ve completely kind of brought it back to life, and it’s a great surface to then play on without any of the marks that it previously would have had.

Synthetic Turf Installation

In the short video below our in house team of installers convert this old compacted stone long jump track, to a bright coloured activity area where the pupils can practice athletic sports to further careers to become professional sports people or Olympians.

This video highlights the process that we use to revitalise this area adding a sufficient sub-base to clear standing water and provide drainage to the surface. After this is completed the then lay the different colours of Synthetic turf to provide the lanes for the wearing course.

Please see video transcript below:

00:05 Hi, guys. It’s Dan from Soft Surfaces here. I’m still going to be showing you a Multi-Sport long jump installation for Vandyke Upper School in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

00:12 So firstly, we examined the old surface, made sure it’s suitable for the surface that we’re going to lay and then also remove the area.

00:17 So as you can see, we’re removing it there for the long jump to be installed. Next, the curb edging is installed, so these are the edging that goes around the long jump, as you can see. So basically we fit them to obviously know where we’re going to build up to for the stone base.

00:25 As you can see, this is the stone base being installed now. So the stone sub-base is basically a necessary part for the Multi Sport to be installed onto, there we are laying it.
And finally, the Multi Sport synthetic turf is then installed.

00:39 So as you can see here, this is us installing the turf, adding to the color of the facility and it really makes it look great when it’s finished.

00:45 So here is the finished product now, you’re going to see some photos of that.

00:49 This is a really great facility, obviously we have four lanes on this, meaning that multiple kids can use it at the same time. It’s great for their educational and recreational use, whilst obviously giving them the ability to have a bit of fun on the playground and obviously learn about the sport long jump. And yeah, just a great surface all-round, really, for a school.

01:02 So we hope you enjoyed this video, and we’ll see you guys later.

Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire is the fourteenth most densely populated county of England and has over half the population living in the counties two largest built-up areas. Luton having a population of 236,000 and the county town of Bedford having 102,000 as of the 2011 census.

Bedfordshire has two of Englands six main highways that pass through Bedfordshire, the A1 and the A5. The A1 from London to Edinburgh sometimes know as the great northern road and the A5 between London and Holyhead Road passing through to Dunstable.

Benefits of a Synthetic Turf in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire

Having a synthetic turf surface installed in the Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire area has many benefits, these include the following:

Proper Drainage

Synthetic Turf is designed to have small holes to seamlessly drain water from the surface, whether this is caused by rain, rinsing or paddling pool. This makes the surface the more safety-conscious option as you won’t find yourself getting injured.

Reduced Maintenance Costs

Synthetic Turf required little to no maintenance, aside from the occasional sweep and rinse to keep leaves and debris at bay. Not only is this time-consuming, but it’s incredibly expensive as opposed to the cheap and simple and easy maintenance.

Withstands Harsh Weather Conditions

When it comes to real grass, too much sun can dry the grass out, whereas too much rain can drown the grass out. Since natural grass is a living thing, it is very sensitive to the environment and requires a rigorous maintenance schedule. However this doesn’t apply to synthetic grass as it is crafted from manmade substances that aren’t really affected by environmental factors.

Please see video transcript below:

00:04 Hi, guys, it’s Dan from Soft Surfaces here, and on this video, we’re going to be showing a 3G pitch installation in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The first thing we did for this is actually examine the previous surface. As you can see here, it’s actually in a flood plain, so we’ve had to install that rhino pave path there to make sure it doesn’t flood. And here’s a very big photo of the area we’re going to be installing the 3G pitch onto. It’s a very large area.

00:22 Next up is the ground works. This actually involved us excavating existing area, obviously digging it all up and making it ready for the pitch to be installed there, and then finally, the construction was actually able to begin. As I said, it was built on a flood plain, so there was a lot of preparation that had to be done there for this to be installed.

Bradford Information

Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bradford rose to prominence in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, particularly wool. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and amongst the earliest industrialised settlements, rapidly becoming the “wool capital of the world”.

The area’s access to a supply of coal, iron ore and soft water facilitated the growth of Bradford’s manufacturing base, which, as textile manufacture grew, led to an explosion in population and was a stimulus to civic investment; Bradford has a large amount of listed Victorian architecture including the grand Italianate City Hall.

Sport in Bradford

Bradford has a long sporting tradition, and Bradford Bulls, formerly Bradford Northern, is one of the most successful rugby league clubs in the world, winning the World Club Championship three times since 2002 and seven times winners of the Rugby Football League Championship.

Bradford City Football Club was formed in 1903. The Football League subsequently elected Bradford City to the league, with a total of 30 votes to replace Doncaster Rovers, because it saw the invitation as a chance to introduce football to the rugby-dominated county.

Sand filled synthetic pitches can become contaminated and damaged if they aren’t looked after properly. This is why it’s important to carry out sports surfacing rejuvenation maintenance. This is done to remove the dirty sand infill from within the synthetic grass fibres and replace it with a new layer to improve the performance qualities.

Talk To Us

A school in Golborne, Lancashire recently asked us to carry out this process for their sand filled sports pitch which had become dirty and contaminated through a lack of maintenance.

The 2G sand filled surface was dirty, compacted and uncomfortable to play on due to the infill being contaminated and filled with debris.

As you can see the existing surface did not look attractive, and it had lost its original playing qualities. It was in need of a thorough deep clean and new application of sand infill to improve it.

Sand Filled Synthetic Pitches

The sand filled sports pitch specification is a 2G surface which is commonly used for football and hockey pitches as well as multi purpose sports facilities. Installation of these artificial grass pitches involves a porous stone sub base with a specialist synthetic carpet rolled out on top. Once the artificial grass surface has been put down, a layer of silica sand infill is put down within the artificial turf fibres.

This sand infill is designed to improve the performance qualities of the artificial surfacing and hold up the grass pile to create a natural feeling playing surface. If the sand filled pitch surfacing is not looked after properly, dirt, litter and natural matter can get stuck within the pile. It will then contaminate the sand infill and the sports surface.

This then leads to the porous layers getting blocked up. Because of this, water will sit on the surface rather than draining away through the pitch. When this happens, it is necessary to carry out sports surfacing rejuvenation maintenance to fix the problem.

Sports Surfacing Rejuvenation Maintenance

The process of sports surfacing rejuvenation maintenance was needed for this school’s sand filled pitch. It had become waterlogged and the performance qualities were being lost. Before the rejuvenation was done, we had to carry out some tests on the synthetic pitch surface to check the levels of contamination within the grass.

We did this by taking samples of the existing dirty sand from different areas around the facility. The sand was then mixed with a solution of water, bicarbonate of soda and a dispersal agent.

Once the solution was thoroughly mixed, the samples were left overnight. We did this to allow the contamination to separate from the sand and float to the top. The results of these tests indicated that the surface was contaminated enough to require the sports surfacing rejuvenation maintenance.

We began the maintenance work by extracting the dirty sand infill out of the turf to get rid of the contaminations and leave behind a clean synthetic grass surface. The next part was installing a new application of silica sand within the artificial grass fibres. This brings back the original playing qualities of the sports pitch.

After applying the sand to the pitch, we then used a drag brush to distribute it evenly through the pile. This is to create consistent performance characteristics across the whole area.

After the Maintenance

The finished result after the sports surfacing rejuvenation maintenance was a much better-looking sand filled pitch. It also now drains well and the students at the school can enjoy using it for a range of sports and activities.

It’s important to maintain these facilities to ensure they are safe and offer good performance qualities.
