Soft Spheres Adding Third Dimension 3d to Play Area
Soft playground rubber spheres are often added to the design of a play area by architects or site managers due to the 3D third dimension it will add. The spheres, made from EPDM rubber granules, are designed for use over wet pour / poured in place safety surfacing as they will act as play equipment, seating and will be pleasing aesthetically.
The EPDM rubber full, ½ half and ¾ globes are made in different diameters and are produced in 6 different colours. 300mm, 400mm, 600mm, 1000mm diameters are the standard sizes for the full spheres. 1000mm is the size for the ½ sphere and 1000mm for a ¾ sphere. The size different colours are dependent on stocks but are Green, Blue, Yellow, Beige, Brown & Orange. The Wet Pour spheres or globes will add shape to the safety surface and can be fixed using 1 of 3 different installation methods.
The spongy safer pour soft surface usually found in play areas is termed differently from person to person, for example someone may call it ‘rubber play area flooring’ whereas someone else my know it as ‘rubber tarmac for children’s playgrounds’. Within the industry this surface is known as ‘Wet-Pour’ safer surfacing, this offers an ideal playground surface and a safe environment for children to play on at schools and nurseries or at public play areas.
The construction of a spongy safer pour playgrounds surface involves mixing rubber granules with a strong adhesive resin and laying it in situ. Safer pour rubber playground surfacing is laid as a two tier system compromising of a safer pour base layer made out of 100% recycled SBR and a safer pour wearing course which is made out of rubber EPDM. The thickness of the base layer varies in size dependent on the required Critical Fall Height (CFH) with the thickness of the wearing course nearly always staying the same at a depth of 15mm, it is this wearing course that determines the colour of the surface and in turn the price.
The perfect sub-base for the safer pour rubber surface to be laid upon is macadam as it is an open textured, porous surface making it SUDS compatible. This means water is allowed to drain correctly through the system which decreases the risk of flooding and water damage.
Soft Surfaces Ltd can help you with any query you have regarding spongy safer pour surfacing, we offer a start to finish service, from quote to project completion. If you would like to find out the costs of safer pour playground surfacing or have any questions in relation to any of our products please contact us at [email protected] for free, friendly and professional advice or visit our website at http://softsurfaces.co.uk/ for more information.
Wetpour playground safety surfacing is a rubberised crumb bound together with specialised glue. The Wetpour is mixed and laid insitu therefore it is important that a Q26 specification is met. The Rubber granules are laid on top of type 1 MOT which is a permeable sub base allowing the drainage of any surface water.
Therefore this makes wet pour rubber crumb flooring SUDS compliant as it is porous. This type of play area flooring is commonly installed in school playgrounds and at nurseries and public parks where play equipment is used. The impact absorbing properties of wetpour surfacing mean that it protects children from injuries when running around and playing in the area.
The Q26 wetpour play surfacing specification is designed to provide reliable safety qualities in outdoor areas so that children can be active and use different types of equipment.
By installing a specialist safety flooring type like this where there is equipment like climbing frames and swings will ensure that children are protected from injuries of they fall. Feel free to speak to us via our contact form if you’d like more information about the costs and prices of wetpour playground flooring.
The base is made from a 2-6mm SBR rubber shock pad which varies in depth depending on the equipment fitted in the play area. For example: the higher a climbing frame, the more rubber base will be required. For this reason it is essential to provide us with the critical fall height before we can provide you with a quote.
The Critical fall height refers to the point that a child may fall from and not the overall height of the equipment in the playground. The surface course is made from a rubber EPDM and is harder wearing than the SBR base.
The rubberized surface is also available in a wide range of colours and graphics which can be viewed on our website at Wetpour Colour Range. Schools and nurseries often choose different graphics and games designs which help kids to learn as they play in a fun activity.
Our professional experts will be able to give you advice on all of the different options to suit the children who will be using the playground. On completion of the job we must log the name and contacts of the installer and date of installation to ensure they have all the surfacing contractor’s information and maintenance details. It is important to keep your wetpour playground safety surfacing clean to help maintain its porous properties and prevent moss and algae from growing on the surface.
If you require a price or some costs for this type of SUDS compatible wetpour surfacing please get in touch with us via the contact form. One of our specialists can provide you with a quote, product sheets, case studies or even design possibilities of a playground, park or play area.
Wet pour flooring is a rubber safety surface which we often install in and around play parks. It’s also suitable play equipment areas, pathways and playgrounds to absorb impact from trips and falls. Our team regularly carry out projects installing playground wet pour flooring in Northamptonshire and surrounding areas.

What are the Safety Standards for Wet Pour Flooring in Playgrounds?
Maintaining safety standards for wet pour flooring in playgrounds is crucial, encompassing factors like critical fall height, impact absorption, and slip resistance to ensure a secure environment for children, using materials such as EPDM granules and polyurethane resin.
Regarding wet pour flooring in playgrounds, the safety of children should always be the top priority. Ensuring that the surface can adequately absorb impact forces from falls is essential to prevent serious injuries.
The slip resistance of the flooring material plays a significant role in minimising accidents.
By utilising EPDM granules and polyurethane resin, playground operators can create a durable and safe surface that meets the necessary standards for fall height and impact absorption.
Critical Fall Height
Ensuring the critical fall height compliance is essential for playground safety surfacing, requiring the use of impact-absorbing materials like EPDM granules and appropriate playground mats to minimise injury risks.
Meeting the critical fall height standards not only ensures the safety of children playing but also mitigates the potential risks of accidents and injuries that could occur during active playtime.
By using impact-absorbing materials such as EPDM granules, playground surfaces can effectively cushion falls, reducing the impact on little ones.
Incorporating suitable playground mats further enhances safety measures, creating a protective barrier between the ground and children at play.
Impact Absorption
Impact absorption capabilities, such as those provided by shock pad layers and EPDM granules, are crucial safety features in playground surfacing, ensuring a cushioned and secure environment that requires periodic maintenance services for optimal performance.
When children engage in play activities, falls from swings, climbing structures, or monkey bars are inevitable occurrences.
The presence of effective impact absorption materials can significantly reduce the risk of injuries by cushioning the impact of falls, dispersing the force, and minimising the chances of serious harm.
Shock pad layers are engineered to absorb impact energy upon impact, acting as a buffer between the hard ground and the child’s body. This crucial layer can prevent severe injuries by reducing the strain on bones and joints.
EPDM granules, made from rubber materials, further enhance safety by providing a soft, yet durable surface that offers excellent shock-absorbing properties.
These granules create a resilient playground surface that can withstand heavy foot traffic and play activities without compromising on safety.
To ensure that these safety components remain effective and meet safety standards, regular maintenance services are essential.
Slip Resistance
Maintaining slip resistance in wet conditions is essential for playground safety, requiring the use of non-slip materials in safety surface constructions to provide a secure and natural-looking environment for children to play.
When children are at play, their exuberance and energy often make them oblivious to potential dangers.
Having a playground constructed with anti-slip surfaces ensures that even in wet weather, the risk of accidental slips and falls is minimised.
These surfaces not only enhance safety but also add a touch of natural beauty to the play area, blending seamlessly with the outdoor surroundings.
Incorporating materials like wetpour rubber can offer excellent slip resistance while maintaining an appealing appearance that complements the natural aesthetics of outdoor play spaces.
What are the Maintenance Requirements for Wet Pour Flooring?
Maintaining wet pour flooring in top condition requires regular inspections, cleaning, and repairs to ensure safety features like EPDM playground safety surfaces and SBR rubber granules remain effective in playgrounds across Somerset.
Regular inspections are crucial to catch any potential issues early on, such as cracks or uneven surfaces, which can pose safety risks.
These inspections should be thorough, checking for any signs of wear and tear or damage that may compromise the integrity of the flooring.
Cleaning routines are essential to prevent dirt and debris build-up, which can affect the functionality of the safety features over time. Using gentle cleaning agents and avoiding harsh chemicals is key to maintaining the quality of the flooring.
Regarding repairs, addressing any damages promptly is vital to prevent further deterioration. Whether it’s patching up small cracks or replacing damaged sections, timely repairs can prolong the lifespan of the wet pour flooring.

Rubber outdoor external playground flooring that is found in parks, play areas and playgrounds is known in the industry as a ‘Wet-Pour’ surface. A wet pour surface is created on site by combining rubber chippings with a single part resin such as polyurethane before being laid onto a pre-prepared base for example MOT Type 1 stone or macadam. These bases are preferred to ones such as block paving as they are seamless and porous making them SUDS compliant. This means that they allow water to filter through the system and drain into the ground suitably and effectively. This is much better compared to letting the water flow straight into other areas and drainage systems causing them to overflow in the instance of heavy rain. By having a porous playground surface, it also stops and puddles building up on the area and causing slip hazards for children using it.
