The surface type we used for this long jump installation was a multisport synthetic surface, and is a great choice for long jump and triple jump use. This is as a result of how great it is to both run and jump on this surface.

In addition to this, many of our clients love the fact that synthetic surfacing can be installed in a huge amount of different colours choices, including many multicoloured options! Here at Soft Surfaces we’ve been building and maintaining these facilities nationwide for over 2 decades now, and there really is no job too big or too small for us, so please feel free to contact us if you are interested.

So you can see now the job has been completed, and looks brilliant on their open school field. They opted for this red runway finish with the blue sand pit cover, which looks really great.

Multisport Long Jump Track Installation

We installed a Multisport synthetic long jump track for a school in Leicester. The facility included a full run-up and a smaller practice lane to use for training. Check out the video below to see the full work and the final result.

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Multisport Long Jump with practice Lane Install in Leicester.

So for this installation the client contacted us interested in a full long jump facility with a practice lane to be fitted onto their grass field. We explained the options that we offer them, and we were quickly on site working on the long jump facility.

Here at Soft Surfaces we can build these sports facilities in many different surface types, however, for this work we opted for a Multisport surfacing for their long jump runway.

Multisport is a really excellent choice for outdoor sports surfacing such as these as its a hard-wearing surface making it ideal for regular outdoor use.

It’s also very well-suited to the outdoors as a result of its brilliant porous qualities, meaning water is actually absorbed by the flooring during our many rainy months.

Contact Us

The advantages of multisport don’t stop there either, as this flooring offers wonderful playability under foot for running tracks and long jumps such as these.

Multisport is also a customisable surface, in the sense that you can specify how many lanes you’d like fitted, as well as the colours of each lane and even the sand pit. We even fitted a practice lane for this particular job!

At Soft Surfaces we’ve been building and maintaining long jump and triple jump runways nationwide for over 20 years now, and are proud of our reputation as market leaders in the field for this service. Feel free to get in touch with us if you’re interested in any of our work!

You can see now the works have been done, and the long jump looks great fitted on the field. The client themselves were so happy with what we’d built for them.

Although we do work nationwide, from doing lots of work in Leicester we currently rank in Google for these keywords:

  • Leicester Long Jump Builders
  • Best Triple Jump Company in Leicester
  • Leicester Multisport Athletics Surfacing
  • Long Jump Surfacing Experts Leicester
  • Multisport Long Jump Builders Leicester
  • And even more than that.

Long Jump Pit Construction Specifications

When installing these facilities we can complete the job to your individual specification. There are a range of long jump pit construction specifications available, however, we make certain to bear in mind your individual needs and requirements to ensure you get the very best finish.

Some people will prefer a long landing pit, whereas others may prefer a short pit which is wide. Whatever you need, we can accommodate.

If you would like to find out more about the various specifications available or make some changes to an existing spec, please make sure to contact us now with your requirements.

Triple Jump Runway

Both long jumps and triple jump runways can be installed in a range of different colours and designs. Some people may prefer rubber surfacing whereas others may prefer needlepunch synthetic carpet. Our team can cater for all your needs, so make sure to get in touch to discuss.

With a lot of the runways we install, we are asked to have multiple lanes in various colours so that more than one individual can complete the jump at the same time.

If you would like to discuss the various colours and surface options available, please speak with our team members now.

Polymeric Rubber Runway

If you are interested in having an athletics facility installed but are unsure which surface to use, why not have a look at polymeric rubber? This surface type is available in a variety of different colours and is perfect for running tracks, long-jumps and triple-jumps.

Contact Our Team

Polymeric rubber is generally used for professional sports and athletics clubs or schools with older children. The surface is porous which means water can drain through easily without puddling. This also means little maintenance is required.

Needlepunch Synthetic Carpet

If polymeric rubber is not right for you, you should certainly have a look at needlepunch synthetic carpet. This is more often used for primary schools and those with younger children, as this surfacing allows more grip for the users.

Needlepunch can also be installed in various colours to meet your individual needs and requirements. This surface is also permeable which means little maintenance is required.

Long Jump Design

Along with the type of surface, you will also get to design the rest of the facility. This includes the size, shape, number of lanes, colours and more. You can even design how you would like the landing pit installed.

The landing pit of a triple jump or long jump is a sand pit filled with silica dry rounded play sand. The sand is needed to be washed and rounded so the kids and children jumping into the landing pit are safe without any cuts or grazes.

They come in a selection of sizes and measurements generally to meet the project’s restrictions. Sometimes they might only have limited space or more importantly, have a certain budget or grant to work to.

The budget is usually funded however many organisations carry out fund raising events to create extra revenue to have other facilities installed. These include things like a high jump fan or throwing circle which can be constructed at the same time; this saves costs on the quote as we will already have our plant and equipment on site.

Designs of the track and field sports facilities need to meet the costs of the grant and therefore the specification is determined on this budget. If they have an unlimited budget they could go for the all singing and dancing IAAF long jump runway however sometimes the costs and prices are an issue and that is when we can tailor fit the quote to suit all needs.

Get a Free Quote

In general the long jump runway and triple jump run up landing pit is usually 9m x 3m however like we said this can be amended to suit the prices they need to meet.

Landing Pit Mowing Strips

We would always advise having landing pit mowing strips installed because it is a pathway around the sand which the teachers can stand on to get the readings of the jump. These strips also prevent grass cutting going in the sand pit.

Rubber Kerbs to Athletic Triple Jump Runways

Rubber Kerbs to Athletic Triple Jump Runways are installed for the safety of the children and kids that will be using the athletics track and field facility.

The rubber kerbs are installed to the perimeter of the long jump landing pit or triple jump sandpit incase of the eventuality the kids might fall back and bang their head on the edging.

Athletics Landing Sand Pit Covers

Athletics landing sand pit covers are now an essential part of sand pit maintenance and Health & Safety. Sand pit covers are normally supplied on a bespoke basis as there does not appear to be a standard or specified size for these products. However, Triple Jump sand pit covers are normally supplied in dimensions of 9m x 3m as this is the normal design / specification. These again, can be supplied to suit any project size.

Athletics landing sand pit covers help to protect the existing track runway from sand being distributed or left on the runway as this can have a long term affect on the tartan surfacing due to the sand blocking the porous nature of the Polymeric surfacing. Having an athletic track sand pit cover can also add a little bit of security to protect against strong winds, animal faeces and falling debris from trees and plants. The Athletic long jump or triple jump runway landing sand pit covers are made from a woven polyester and have poles which are 42mm diameter. However, these can be made to suit most budget / cost requirements subject to the customers funding, budgets available.

The long jump can also have a white timber hardwood take off board and this is installed flat into the ground, flush with the other surfacing. The length of this board is 1.22m x 200mm x 100mm. Long jump is now a popular part of sporting culture in the UK due to the recent revival in athletics due to the Olympics and sports and schools participation. Long Jump Runway

Below you can see a video of the installation of the long jump installation we carried out.

Please see video transcript below:
00:06 Hi, guys. It’s Dan here. And today we’re going to be looking at a Multisport long jump installation that we carried out in the Milton Keynes area.

Firstly, the actual surface was completely waterlogged, so we had to carry out drainage for that. And this essentially carrying out the prep for the sunbed itself. For the next step, which is going to be installing the soft kerb edging on the geotextile membrane. This essentially prevents weeds from growing underneath the sunbed.

After that, we actually remove the old surface where the long jump runway is going to be installed. And then we move on to install the pre cast concrete, which is the edging that surrounds it. So that’s kind of what we edge up to as we’re installing the long jump. Once that’s in, the Multisport synthetic turf is then applied. So, as you can see, this is coming together now as a final finish.

And once it’s all installed, this is the complete project. So as you can see, they look absolutely fantastic for any kind of school facility or athletics club or athletics track you might be going to. A very popular product in schools and they’re great for extracurricular and curricular activities for children.

If you have a specific size that you have to use or only have a minimal budget or costs, Soft Surfaces Ltd can design and construct Javelin Run ups to suit most budget requirements. Standard javelin runways are made from Sprayed EPDM rubber but this is more commonly known as tartan surfacing or a Polymeric surface.

The length of this runway is 36.5m but with a minimum length or 30m. It has a construction width of 4.3m with a throwing arc with an 8m radius. The lines on the Javelin runway are normally 50mm wide and white and the runway has 2 parallel lines which are 4m apart. Inspired Facilities and Sport England are now giving away funding or grants for javelin construction as part of the Olympic Legacy with a view of getting more children taking part or being introduced to the sport.

Athletics High Jump

The video below shows the installation process of the high jump athletics facility.

00:07 Hi, guys. It’s Dan here. Today we’re going to be looking at a multi-sport high jump installation that we recently just carried out in the Berkshire area. The photos, initially, here show the groundwork being prepared, so there it was beforehand.

And here we are actually carrying out the preparations for the high jump to be installed for that particular surface itself. Once that stage is complete, we obviously install the edging, which you can see here.

Then, obviously, the porous stone base is installed to the surface, ready for the multi-sport surface to be laid on top of that. Which is exactly what we’re doing in this photo right now. You can see it being installed onto the surface, which is great.

Then, once that’s on there, you’ll be able to see the completed project, which is the high jump itself. These can be used all year round. It’s great for extracurricular and curricular activities for the children.

It keeps them healthy and gives you a new sport to be playing at your school itself. It’s a very popular product for us within schools.

School Athletics Track Designs

Out of all sporting activities, none are as famous as athletics. Due to the wide variety of sports that are offered through it, a lot of people really enjoy taking part in it. However, when it comes to it, you will need a sprinting track and a long jump runway to take part in these activities fully and properly.

There are plenty of school athletics track designs available and you can fully customise the surfacing to suit your requirements and budget.

Talk To Us

Benefits of Athletics in Schools

Athletics is seen by a lot of people as one of the most active areas of sport due to the range of different activities included. Ranging from long jump to sprint, athletics offers pupils a chance to work out a wide variety of muscles compared to other sports which mainly focus on one section.

Not only do pupils benefit from the wide variety of activities it offers, but so do the schools. With athletics facilities, all you need is lanes to do most of the running events and a jump track to do the jumping events.

Types of Surfacing for an Athletic Facility

When it comes to getting an athletic track surfaced, there are two main different surfaces you can choose from. These are either EPDM Polymeric Rubber or Needlepunch Synthetic Carpet.

EPDM Polymeric Rubber is used by many high schools, colleges and clubs as it is a lot more professional quality for sprint tracks and long jump runways. The surface is made up of rubber granules which are mixed in with a binder. After this, the mixture is then spread out on top of a macadam sub base.

In addition to this, there is a range of colour options that you can choose from to make the track more personalised if desired. Line markings can also be spray painted on to the track for each different athletics event, meaning it can be used for multiple events without the hassle of having to get new tracks installed.

Needlepunch Synthetic Carpet is a lot more popular with primary schools due to it having a softer and more impact absorbing texture than EPDM. This surface is an artificial turf product which is fibre bonded with a tight yarn, whilst having a layer of sand installed within the pile for stability. It’s also used for activity flooring, so check out this page for more details on that.

This is perfect for recreational sports facilities as kids will most likely take a few tumbles when taking part in these types of sports. It can also come in a range of bright colours, with the most popular selection being rainbow due to how quickly it can get the children’s attention.

Both surfaces are used for different groups but they both have a lot of things in common. They’re both high quality, both take around the same amount of time to install and both allow for years of athletic sports to be carried out on them.

Contact Us

Primary School Athletics Games

In primary school, it can be a lot harder to get children interested in sports as they would rather be left to their own minds. However, athletic tracks give children a sense of interest and wonder. It keeps them interested since most of them would have never seen such a thing. Have a look at this post to see the benefits of promoting athletics sports at your school.

Another reason is that the range of sports you can do on these facilities is phenomenal. Ranging from relay races which can build on teamwork skills to marathons which will improve the stamina and determination of a kid. It’s very rare for most sports to be able to keep the interest of the child whilst also giving them a lot of health benefits.

The best bit about a school athletics track is the physical expression it allows. With kids having a lot of energy and wanting to express it, classrooms can become a nightmare if these children don’t get a chance to fully let loose and get rid of the energy. Athletics is a physically intensive activity which will make sure that children who take part get that chance to express their energy.

By doing this, children will feel a lot happier and more exhausted from getting that chance and in lessons, they won’t be as energetic and giddy. This gives teachers a well-deserved break as well and overall, creates a great learning environment for children to learn in compared to if these kids still had all their energy built up.

Running Track Surface Specifications

When it comes to getting a running track or a long jump runway, you’ll need to supply us with the specifications of the facility you want. We will need measurements of the area where you want to install, so we know if the installation is possible. Alongside this, we will also want to know what type of surface you want to have installed. These things all affect the cost of the athletics surface so it’s important that we know as many details as possible.

This video shows one of our projects where our team installed a long jump surface at a school in Denbigh:

We can install these facilities in a range of levels, sizes and shapes so by telling us these factors as well, we can get a better image of the final product you have in mind. There are also compact athletic facilities available if you only have limited outdoor space. Regardless of how big the track is, you will also need to carry out regular cleaning.

This cleaning process will stop contaminants from appearing and causing problems with the track itself. We do offer a cleaning service for these tracks as well so feel free to enquire about it. Alongside this, if the area gets damaged, we can also repair them for you and even install a few minor features like landing area covers and removable take-off boards.

Costs to Build a Compact Athletics Facility

When carrying out a new project, the costs to build a compact athletics facility will depend on a number of factors. A few of these include dimensions, chosen design and your location.

The term ‘compact athletics facility’ refers to recreational running tracks or activity areas that are installed in smaller spaces. These offer a simpler alternative to full-sized athletics facilities. This is often done in urban areas at schools to give a more cost-effective option for children looking to get involved in different sports.

Get in Touch

Smaller Athletic Facilities

A range of components can be incorporated into the design of a recreational sports area, choosing these different parts can help cut the costs to build a compact athletics facility. These individual parts could include sprint tracks, long jump pits, high jump areas and jogging circuits. View this post to learn more about the different designs we offer for schools.

By scaling down each of these elements, schools are able to introduce children to a variety of sports from a young age without having to install a full-sized athletics facility. You can incorporate this into PE lessons, break times and extracurricular activities. It can then create a fun environment which also contributes to increased health and activity.

The video below shows the construction of a compact high jump athletics facility at a school. The surfacing was installed using Multisport synthetic turf which is ideal for recreational sports facilities especially when young children are using the area.

We would be happy to offer you some more advice on the costs to build a compact athletics facility. Simply fill in our quick enquiry form to speak to us. These outdoor sports areas can be installed to schools, colleges, leisure centres and other public spaces. They offer a more affordable alternative to full-sized running tracks or other facilities. There are many more benefits of school athletics if you are thinking about having one of these facilities installed, both for physical and mental development.

Athletics Surfacing Installers

We are specialist athletics surfacing installers and can create designs for a range of compact athletics facilities throughout the UK. These areas provide sports tracks for recreational use as they come in smaller sizes. We can install them in school playgrounds or other areas with limited space.

Our professional team often install these types of facilities in a Multisport synthetic turf surface which is perfect for recreational areas and for use by younger children. Some of the designs available could be multi-use long jump pits with all-purpose lanes, sprint tracks and high jump fans. In a lot of cases, a running straight of 40-60 metres will form the focal point of a compact athletics facility. This will often have other features installed around it.

Choosing the Right Design

You could choose a different design if you’re looking to cut the costs to build a compact athletics facility. Therefore we can be flexible on the specification to suit your requirements. You can also incorporate jogging routes into the design; this could consist of a path that flows around the perimeter of the area to make the most of your existing space.

Depending on the people who are going to be using the area, our athletics surfacing installers will be able to advise you on the best design of the athletics area. For example, a primary school might prefer to have a smaller area with soft Multisport turf.

On the other hand, a high school or college could choose a larger facility with polymeric rubber track surfacing. Whatever you choose, we will be able to make it work with your budget. We can also offer numerous different coloured designs so you can customise the final appearance.
