Activities to Teach Kindness on the Playground

Kindness is one of the most important things we can teach children. There are several activities you can do on the playground which encourage kids to be kind to each other.

During their nursery years, most children can only see things from their own perspective. This means they can’t always understand someone else’s feelings. By encouraging empathy, children can develop important life skills outside of the curriculum.

Studies show that people who are kind to others are actually healthier and happier in life. But what activities can schools and nurseries do to help kids become more compassionate?

Games Which Promote Kindness

There are many games and activities which promote kindness and cooperation between children. Check out some ideas below:

Role-Play Activities

Role-playing games offer kids the chance to make up their own scenarios and play different characters. Things like shopkeepers and customers, or doctors and nurses are popular games. These will help children learn how to empathise with others and be kind.

Pieces of equipment like outdoor stages and mini shop counters are great for these activities. Kids can use their imaginations and take what they have learnt into real-world situations. There are plenty of different designs and equipment you could use to enhance your play area.

Team Building Exercises

Working in a team is a great way for pupils to cooperate with each other and listen to different viewpoints. When working towards a common goal, children need to communicate with each other and decide the best course of action.

Some examples of team building games include:

  • Team quiz hosted by the teacher
  • Building an outdoor den
  • Acting out scenes on stage
  • Making up and telling stories
  • Sporting activities like football, netball and hockey

These games encourage teamwork and communication which are vital social skills to learn.

Understanding Each Other’s Emotions

Up to the age of 4, most children can’t understand other people’s emotions very well. It may sound bad, but young kids are programmed to only focus on their own needs and point of view.

When they begin primary school, these skills improve as they relationships with others. Schools can offer plenty of activities to teach kindness on the playground during lessons and break times.

Roughly 20% of children report experiencing bullying at school, and this can have a range of negative effects. This is why encouraging kids to be kind and empathetic to each other from a young age is so important.

Voicing Negative Feelings

Sometimes playing games on the playground can lead to fall-outs or disputes between children. While these situations are not nice to see, they can offer important learning opportunities.

Take the pupils aside and ask them what they’re feeling – Angry? Sad? Confused? Worried? Asking them to describe how they feel helps them understand each other’s point of view.

They can then talk it out and resolve the situation. Next time they’ll be able to move on and cooperate when playing the same game. This is a crucial part of social development which kids can take into adult life.

Summary

A playground is a great place for kids to learn important life lessons outside of the classroom. Practical activities promote teamwork and help young kids to learn empathy. They also promote feelings of respect for each other.

There are lots of ways to teach kindness on the playground through many different activities. Schools and nurseries can encourage a positive attitude and help reduce instances of bullying by making this a top priority.

PS4 Activity Games Space Area in Penrith

Our installation team recently completed a project to build a PS4 activity games space area in Penrith. The work was done for North Lakes School through the Sport England Primary Spaces scheme which aimed to improve outdoor facilities to get kids more active in schools. These multi-use games spaces have been specially designed to offer children a versatile outdoor area which can be utilised for numerous activities, sports and games. The complete facility is comprised of a multi-coloured playing surface with activity panels and goals at either end which can be used for football, basketball and other games.

Find Out More

For this particular construction project, the school already had an existing tarmac area which they used as a playground and MUGA court. This gave us a perfect sub base for the chosen activity surfacing specification which was the Multisport synthetic carpet. The reason we used this artificial turf flooring is that it is extremely durable and versatile so it is suitable for continuous use by children playing a lot of different games and sports. Because this specification is a fibre bonded style of carpet which is needled together, it is a lot more porous than other synthetic turf so water can drain through it very quickly and efficiently. We often install this flooring type for multi use games areas and recreational athletics facilities at schools, colleges and local sports clubs.

The first stage of the construction process for our professional installers was to put in the multi-coloured fencing and goal ends at the two ends of the school’s chosen area. These contain a football goal, basketball hoop and coloured shapes which can be incorporated into any PE lessons or break time activities. The existing tarmac surface provides a good foundation for the Multisport synthetic flooring as it is hard, smooth and durable. This means that the macadam will support the carpet and provide even playing qualities on the activity surface.

Penrith Activity Area

Once the fencing and goal ends had been secured into place, the installers began laying out the synthetic carpet pieces in the specified design. This was done in a blue and green checkered square pattern with yellow down the sides and red in front of the two goals. Each piece of artificial surfacing was rolled out into the correct position and secured to the tarmac base at the seams with a specialist glue to hold them firmly in place.

The final part of the work for this PS4 activity games space area in Penrith was to apply a layer of sand infill across the whole area. This is done because the curly yarn fibres of the Multisport synthetic turf encapsulate the sand to ensure even playing qualities. The silica sand particles help to hold the grass fibres in an upright position to ensure players are comfortable when running around on the surface. When this process was finished, the end result was a fantastic outdoor activity area that the children and staff at the school are very happy with. This facility can now be used during PE lessons, break times and extracurricular clubs to help pupils become more active and improve their health.

Please have a look at this video which shows the full construction process for this activity surface:

Activity Surfacing Installers

As specialist activity surfacing installers we have completed numerous projects throughout the UK so we offer help on every aspect of the work. We can lay out the flooring straight away however we may put down a shockpad first. This gives a more impact absorbing surface which is safe for children to use. You can also customise the design of the whole games space by adding equipment like PS3 and PS4 enclosures and games panels. These create a fun interactive play area for children that is suitable for lessons or extracurricular activities.

Make sure you contact us today if you’ve got any questions with regards to activity flooring construction in schools. We provide a detailed quote for any work you need us to carry out. We’ll also provide product sheets and videos of our previously completed work on games spaces.

This makes it ideal for multi-activity surface construction in primary schools where younger children will be taking part in different games for lessons and at break times. You may get the artificial activity surfacing in different colours and design it how you would best see fit which would appeal to younger children in primary schools.

The activity flooring construction itself should always take place on a prepared macadam sub base. This may be installed by us or we could use an existing tarmac area as the sub base if you are looking to resurface it with the synthetic turf. We will roll out the coloured activity surface carpet and secure it at the joints and the edges to keep it secure and prevent it from moving around.

If you are thinking about multi-activity flooring construction at your school, we offer advice on the costs and help you to create a design for the project. Fill in our quick enquiry form on this page and we’ll come back to you with additional information and case studies of our previous work.

Needlepunch Facility Resurfacing

We also complete activity surface maintenance works as well as being activity surfacing installers. If your synthetic games surface does get misused or vandalised in anyway then we’ll be able to fix the problem with reactive maintenance. To avoid this from happening then you will need to complete regular maintenance and repairs to make sure that you get the most of your multi-activity flooring for as long as possible.

The specification should last for about 10 years once the installation is complete. Regular maintenance can add an extra 4 to 5 years so it can make a difference to costs on needlepunch facility resurfacing in the future. Routine checks are important to ensure that your games space surface doesn’t have any problems. These could be things like a part of the flooring had ripped or pulled away. These are necessary for helping you notice these small issues before they become serious. If you’ve got any other types of multi use games are which is in need of cleaning and maintenance, head over to this page – http://softsurfaces.co.uk/muga-surfacing-repair/ for more advice on how we can help.

How is Multisport Synthetic Surfacing Installed?

The installation of multisport synthetic surfacing consists of laying down an appropriate sub base and then installing the synthetic carpet. Firstly the existing surface is dug out if necessary to the correct levels. Then the installers will stone up to required level and lay down a macadam sub base. Once an appropriate sub base has been installed, the experts will lay down a geotextile membrane. This will prevent weeds from growing through the surface help to prevent contamination from beneath.

We can then install the Multisport synthetic carpet over this. The team could also include line markings by cutting out the material and laying them between the seams. Our company aims to offer the best prices for multi-activity flooring construction. We’ll always do our best to carry out the installation to a top standard. We pride ourselves in the quality of our installations. Therefore you can be sure the final project will be top quality.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Sports Court Anti Slip Painting in Leicester.

So this client previously had a worn out tarmacadam surface that they initially feared needed resurfacing, however after getting in contact with us and showing us some photos of the surface, we reassured them that we could bring their surface back to life with an anti-slip painting.

The first benefit of having anti-slip painting carried out on your existing sports surface is that it’s much cheaper than having a full resurface carried out. So as long as your surface doesn’t have too much extensive damage, this is something we can do for you.

The second advantage to this maintenance solution is that is truly does restore the surface back to it’s best, both from an aesthetics point of view and also from a playability aspect.

The anti slip paint we apply is of the highest quality in the market, ensuring this is a long lasting solution to your existing flooring.

We can install anti-slip colour coating is basically any colour you choose, and can even change the line markings should you want to play a new sport or multiple new sports on your new surface.

The process involves a deep and thorough clean of your existing flooring to ensure all moss and algae build-up is removed, followed by small surface repairs where needed. Once that’s all carried out, we can crack on with the painting of the surface.

We’ve been carrying out these services nationwide for over 20 years now, so please do get in contact with us if you are interested.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today I’m going to be showing you a 3G Artificial Grass Construction in Liverpool.

So for this job, the client came to us with an existing tarmacadam surface but wished to have a new surface fitted that would be better suited to sports like football and rugby all year-round. We explained why we felt our 3G surfacing could be the perfect match for what they were looking for, and shortly after we were booked in to install.

So here at Soft Surfaces we’ve been installing and maintaining 3G Surfaces nationwide for over 20 years now, and pride ourselves on the quality of both the materials we use and the installation we carry out.

3G is an excellent option for those looking to have the feel of natural grass for sports such as football and rugby, but without the tedious traditional maintenance often needed. This makes it a very practical option for places like schools, universities, football and rugby clubs etc.

3G synthetic surfaces are also great due to the fact that they’re able to be used all year round, making organised sporting events across the year much easier than on traditional grass sports pitches. All of these factors are why 3G is becoming so popular here in the UK.

At Soft Surfaces, we’re happy to work on jobs of all shapes and sizes across the country, so whatever it is you’re looking for, please feel free to get in touch if you are interested.

You can see now that the job has been fully completed, and looks outstanding as their new synthetic sports facility. The client loves their new sports pitch and was extremely pleased with the work we carried out for them.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a 3G Artificial Sports Pitch Resurfacing in Woking, Surrey.

So this job was carried out at a school, and they got in contact with us wanting a brand new sports pitch to replace their existing damaged facility.

When they gave us a ring, the school specified the want for an artificial surface capable of being used all year round that could replicate the feel of playing football on natural grass. It was then mutually agreed that the 3G flooring we offer would be well suited to their needs.

The 3G Surfaces we fit here at Soft Surfaces are a brilliant choice for outdoor sports facilities here in the United Kingdom, as first this flooring type can be used all year round due to it’s synthetic grass build-up. This is perfect for countries like ours with on and off the weather.

Also, another large advantage of these 3G sports surfaces is that the maintenance needed for natural grass is removed, so the same need to trim or regularly monitor your surface is no more. This makes 3G surface ownership much easier than that of a large natural grass field.

The final benefit of the 3G we install is simply the fact that this surface type feels so brilliant to play sports such as football, rugby and more on, as a result of this flooring type replicating the playing feel of this sports brilliantly.

The 3G flooring we fit across the country is amongst the best quality in the market, and that’s why it’s a popular surface type for us to fit nationwide. No matter what size the job you’re looking to have installed, if you are interested in 3G surfacing, please feel free to get in touch.

You can see now from these images that the job has now been completed, and looks stunning as their new sports pitch. The school were over the moon with the quality of the flooring and with the job we provided.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you an Artificial Grass and Rubber Mulch Surfacing in Derby.

This work was carried out at this play area, which wanted to have a surface fitted that would give the appearance of natural grass whilst being able to be used all year round.

They also enquired about having a surface fitted as a tree surround, again, to give a natural appearance without the traditional maintenance required.

So for their play area, we opted to fit a synthetic turf around their existing play equipment. The quality of artificial grass we install ensures that a natural look and feel remains, whilst enabling those using the facility to access it all year round, removing the need for cutting and traditional upkeep.

At Soft Surfaces, we’ve been fitting and maintaining artificial grass nationwide for over 20 years now, and we have teams scattered across the country, saving clients money in travel costs.

The other surface we fitted for the tree surrounds at this area was rubber mulch. This surface type is ideal for areas such as these as whilst it provides a natural-looking surface, it also removes the need for traditional tree surround maintenance, making life much easier for those that own the area.

Just like artificial grass, we’ve been fitting rubber mulch nationwide for years now, so please do get in touch if you are interested.

You can see from these images here that the works have been installed, and look tremendous. The client was extremely happy with our work.

Video Transcript

Hi guys its Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you an Artificial Grass and Wetpour Pathway Installation at a School in Birmingham.

For this work, the school wanted to renovate their outdoor area by having new outdoor surfacing fitted. They were keen on having multiple surfaces fitted that would suit their needs, whilst ensuring the children stayed safe at the facility.

So the first surface type we installed at their school was the large artificial grass flooring. This was installed to replace their old grass area, whilst still providing the appearance of natural grass.

One of the biggest benefits for them was that the grass needed little to no maintenance all year round, saving the school money over time.

Additionally, the synthetic turf we fitted for this work is fully porous, enabling rainwater to drain through the surface throughout the entire year.

The other surface type we fitted for this job was wetpour rubber surfacing, which was fitted around the perimeter of the school.

This was an important flooring for the school to have fitted, as its EPDM rubber make-up means it’s one of the safest surfaces available, soaking up trips and falls really well.

Also, just like the artificial grass, this flooring is also porous, perfect as an outdoor area.

We’ve been installing and maintaining a variety of outdoor surface types nationwide for over 2 decades now, so no matter what works, our team is spread out across the country and can help.

You can see from these photos here that the final job has been completed, and looks great at their school. They were really pleased with what we did for them.

Artificial Grass and Wetpour Roadway Construction in Liverpool

Soft surfaces installed this Synthetic turf and Wet Pour Roadway for a school in Liverpool. Take a look at the video below to see the full project from start to finish and see how the roadway looked.

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you an Artificial Grass and Wetpour Roadway Construction in Liverpool.

So for this particular installation, the client gave us a call enquiring about having a largely maintenance-free area for the kids to play on, whilst keeping a natural appearance. We broke down the services we could provide, and soon after we were cracking on with the work.

So to start things off, let’s discuss the surface type we used for the surrounding areas, which was artificial grass. We’ve been fitting this flooring type for over 20 years now, and whilst synthetic turf is becoming more and more popular here in the UK, it’s really important that a professional fit this in order to preserve the longevity of the surface.

The main benefits of artificial grass are fairly well-known including the fact that it helps keep the area looking natural whilst removing the traditional maintenance needed for natural turf. A big advantage for this particular install though was that it can be used all year round, and when children were leaving the play area they weren’t dragging mud and dirt back in with them after playtime.

For the actual play area roadway, we opted for a wetpour surface. Again, like artificial grass, we’ve been fitting this surface nationwide for decades, and are proud to have become market leaders in the field. Wetpour is made up of an EPDM rubber so it’s extremely safe and can be fitted in a huge variety of colours and specifications. We can plan all of this out with you prior to the install.

You can see now that the final job has been complete, and looks truly excellent. The client was over the moon with what we achieved.

Although we do work nationwide, as we’ve done plenty of jobs in the Liverpool area we now rank in Google for these keyphrases:

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you an Artificial Grass with Rubber Shock Pad Installation at St Ann’s Hospital, London

So with this installation, the hospital got in contact with us with the intention of creating an outdoor space that gave the appearance of natural grass, but with reduced maintenance.

We explained the artificial grass that we could install for them, along with its many benefits. Shortly after, we were on site cracking on with the work.

So one big benefit of the synthetic turf we installed for this job is that it’s a brilliant outdoor surface, particularly for organisations such as these that could do without the tedious traditional grass maintenance.

The artificial surface is perfect for the outdoors here in the UK as it’s largely weatherproof, able to withstand our more challenging months and with no need to cut or trim in the summer.

We only use high-quality materials when fitting this product, as we feel it’s important to preserve as much of the natural look with the artificial grass as possible.

For this actual job, we chose to fit a rubber shock pad underneath the artificial grass itself. The reason for this is because the rubber soaks up trips and falls excellently, and we wanted to ensure that the flooring was as safe as possible at the hospital.

At Soft Surfaces, we’ve been installing and maintaining fake turf for over 20 years now, and are proud to offer these services nationwide. So if you’re interested in having artificial grass fitted, please feel free to get in touch with us.

You can see here that the final job has been completed, and looks great as their new outdoor surface. The hospital themselves were really pleased with the work we carried out for them.
