Rubber Play Surface Costs

The costs and prices of the project depend on whether the area needs sufficient construction to help aid drainage. If it is at the bottom of a hill then a deeper excavation is needed and backfilled with porous stone. Doing this makes the rubber playground surface suitable for all weather conditions as it will be porous.

The design you choose can also affect the costs as the vibrant wetpour colours cost more than the standard black. Having multiple colours on the surface can also increase the price as we have to install adjoining colours on separate days. We also offer the choice of different shaped wetpour rubber graphics to make the facility even more fun.

People often choose to have these to add more activities onto the area and to make it educational. There are loads of shapes and designs we can provide including:

  • Alphabet snakes
  • Numbers
  • Roadways
  • Road signs
  • Animals
  • Phonics games
  • Hopscotch
  • Footprints

We have a huge catalogue of graphic inserts which we can send over if you would like to find out more about them. You can also see case studies of our previous work and some of the designs we can offer.

Installing Rubberised Playgrounds

The rubber playground surface is a porous system that consists of SBR rubber base and EPDM rubber wearing course. Construction for these facilities will go as follows:

  • Excavation of existing surface to the required depth
  • Installation of MOT Type 1 stone sub base to the area
  • Lay a tarmac layer onto the sub base with PCC edges
  • Installing the SBR base layer of the rubber system
  • Placing coloured graphic shapes in the chosen position on the area
  • Laying the EPDM wearing course on top of the SBR base and around any graphics

The play area surfaces are usually constructed by groundworks which include excavation, dig out then stone up of the area which is installed within an edge which is most common to be a PCC edge and not timber. Timber edges are cheaper but prone to shrinking so a pcc edge is always advised for rubber surface playground surfacing areas.

If your existing surface is already macadam of good quality we can lay the rubber surfacing straight onto this. You will need to ensure that the current macadam is fully porous so that water can drain completely through the surface and will not flood.

Yellowing, Discolouring of Rubber Crumb Wet Pour Surfacing

Aromatic binders (moisture curing) create a yellowing effect on all surfaces. The phenomenon is the result of the formation of transparent crystals during the curing process, which cause light to refract when passing through them in the same way as a simple prism. It is the light refraction when viewing the finished surface that gives the appearance of a yellow tint, the actual colour of the granule does not change as can be seen by cutting a cross section. The appearance of the surface will also vary depending on the position, the angle or the sunlight conditions from which it is viewed.

Talk To Us

The yellowing effect is most noticeable when colours such as blue or eggshell, where yellow and blue light combine to make green. The effect on the other colours is to make them appear darker. There is now way to completely avoid this effect with aromatic binders and care must be taken by specifiers and designers to ensure that the client is fully aware of how the finished surface will look.

Blending another colour, such as black, to produce a variegated finish can mitigate the impact of yellowing by reducing the visual impact. Large areas of blue should be avoided, as work lines will show up on this colour more than any other colour.

True Aliphatic binders can greatly reduce this effect initially but cannot claim to offer permanent protection or enhanced physical properties. However, aliphatic binders are three times more expensive that aromatic binders. Some binders marketed as being aliphatic do not use IPP isocyanides as a base and consequently cannot claim to be truly aliphatic.

Through several years of experience and constructive installer consultation and feedback, this phenomenon occurs to all moisture curing polyurethane binders regardless of manufacturer.

Removal of Rubber Play Tiles & Wet Pour Upgrade

We are seeing more of play areas that are in need of urgent renovation. Many of these areas are children’s play areas and have an existing rubber tile surface. Whilst it is feasible to replace these areas with a like for like product, Wet Pour Safety Surfacing is a fantastic product to use to regenerate and upgrade the area.

Get in Touch

Wet Pour Surface or Soft Rubber Surface is an impact absorbing surface which is made from EPDM recycled rubber. It is a porous, hard wearing, low maintenance product that is perfect for soft play surfaces. The change of surface can be done by expert installers. The existing area size and specification will determine the overall price for the upgrade of the surfacing. The removal of the rubber tiles is the first thing to do. This will leave a sub base of Concrete, Tarmac or MOT Type 1 Stone.

Wet Pour Surfacing will require a minimum thickness in able to work properly. If there is to be any play equipment on the area, the installers and specifiers will need to know of any Critical Fall Height information as this will determine the thickness of the product. 30mm is the minimum thickness of the Wet Pour. Installers will always need an edge to work to with the Rubber Crumb Surfacing so a timber edge may need to be installed around the perimeter of the soft play area, made up to the thickness of the finished product. Once this has been done, the Wet Pour can be installed. Finished In either Black, 12 different colours or a 50 – 50% mix colour fleck, you can endless colour options and numerous Wet Pour Graphics can even be designed and installed into the play area. Once the Wet Pour has been installed, leave for 36 hours and you will be left with a fantastic, hard wearing finish that will comply with even the strictest test from enthusiastic children!

Poured in Place Rubber Bouncy Playground Surfaces

Poured In Place Rubber Bouncy Playground Surfaces are a safety surfacing requirement to be installed under play equipment to meet the HIC test for children should they fall off the playground equipment platforms and this poured in place rubber safety surface is bouncy, spongy and soft to absorb the kids fall and meet the CFH of the equipment. The critical fall height CFH is varied for each swing, roundabout and slide manufacturer with the supplier giving the wetpour installer the correct free fall space measurements and CFH of the play equipment. Poured in place wetpour rubber surfacing can be installed at 20mm thick, 40mm and upto 110mm depth to reach the fall heights. The SBR base poured in place rubber is what gives the spongy feel underfoot and many know this surface as bouncy tarmac however it is a rubber crumb granule. The best thing about the poured in place rubber is that it can be installed to any size and can fit around all obstructions as can be installed insitu on site. The insitu synthetic surfacing is available in all colours however the most popular are green epdm, red edpm, blue epdm, yellow epdm and orange edpm. If you need any costs, prices and quotes on the poured in place rubber safety surface then please ring our office on 01625 445760. We will need the measurements, designs and specifications on the project to determine the prices for you!!

Wetpour Band Perimeter Shrinkage Repairs

Wetpour Band Perimeter Shrinkage Repairs are very common in the UK because rubber crumb EPDM is prone to shrink and expand in adverse weather conditions. The shrinkage of the rubber usually pulls away from the perimeter edge and therefore a wetpour band repair is usually needed.

Our team can fix these issues by cutting around the edging and installing a new layer of wetpour. This makes the surface stronger and improves the appearance, as well as removing trip hazards. You will often find this flooring installed beneath children’s play structures to add safety qualities and protect against injuries.

Repairing Wetpour Edges

Band repairs can be done by purchasing a DIY wetpour repair kit or by a specialist surfacing contractor in playgrounds and at soft surfaces we can supply both options. The perimeter shrinkage usually needs to be cut back so that the existing rubber crumb EPDM has a sharp edge to install up to and the band strip is usually installed which commonly is in a contrasting colour to make it look like a graphic.

Below you can see a video of one of our projects where we repaired a play surface. The existing wet pour flooring had shrunk away from its edges and had left a gap. We cut away the loose edge and filled in a new application of rubber surfacing to smooth it over. This also had the effect of adding a nice border design around the perimeter of the area.

Rubber Playground Repairs

It’s important to maintain your play area surface if you want it to last as long as possible. This can be done by regularly brushing the area and applying a light jet wash to remove debris. Unfortunately, over time the flooring can become damaged and a wetpour repair may be required. Our team can complete this for you, or alternatively supply a DIY kit for you to carry out a small repair.

For further details on the shrinkage and expansion of wetpour then use the contact box on this page. We would be happy to provide a quote for this work and give more information on the process of wetpour band perimeter shrinkage repairs. Prices can vary depending on the area size and the amount of work that will be required. The site location can also have an effect on the overall costs so we’ll need to consider this as well.

What are Rubber Play Spheres?

Rubber Play Spheres are ball of soft EPDM rubber designed specifically for playground surfacing. These play area additions make for great platforms for children to exercise and play on, whilst ensuring that their safety remains the priority at all times. As these surfaces are made out of soft materials, they ensure that the critical fall height (CFH) regulations and safety requirements are met.

These Spheres can be specified in loads of different colours and sizes depending on what you’re looking for. Some clients like to have a mixture of the two, whilst others prefer to keep to a colour scheme or certain size!

Soft Spheres Adding Third Dimension 3d to Play Area

Soft playground rubber spheres are often added to the design of a play area by architects or site managers due to the 3D third dimension it will add. The spheres, made from EPDM rubber granules, are designed for use over wet pour / poured in place safety surfacing as they will act as play equipment, seating and will be pleasing aesthetically.

The EPDM rubber full, ½ half and ¾ globes are made in different diameters and are produced in 6 different colours. 300mm, 400mm, 600mm, 1000mm diameters are the standard sizes for the full spheres. 1000mm is the size for the ½ sphere and 1000mm for a ¾ sphere. The size different colours are dependent on stocks but are Green, Blue, Yellow, Beige, Brown & Orange. The Wet Pour spheres or globes will add shape to the safety surface and can be fixed using 1 of 3 different installation methods.

Rubber Safety Surface Overlay

Do you have an existing wetpour surface that has shrunk at the edges and has rips or tears? There are a few options you could use to fix this, but we think the best option would be a rubber safety surface overlay.

We have worked on many projects with the aim of upgrading the play area by carrying out an overlay of the existing wet pour safety surfacing. In the majority of these cases, the old surfacing becomes shrunken at the edges and tears may occur in the middle of the surfacing – particularly if the area gets a lot of use.

Get a Free Quote

The different options include:

  • A full rip up and replace
  • Perimeter repairs and patch repairs
  • Wetpour recap/overlay

The reason we would generally recommend the rubber safety surface overlay is due to saving on costs rather than ripping up and replacing. We would suggest the overlay rather than the patch and perimeter repairs, as you will not be able to see the repairs of an overlay, as you will be getting a completely new layer of wet pour.

What is a Wetpour Recap?

A wetpour recap is the installation of a new layer of EPDM rubber crumb over existing to look like a new surface. The recap does not involve ripping up the existing surface. The basics of a wetpour overlay consist of:

  1. Mix EPDM rubber granules with specialist resin
  2. Chase cut existing edges if required
  3. Pour rubber and resin mix over the area and spread to 15mm
  4. Leave to cure

The reason why Wetpour recaps are often preferred over patch repairs and perimeter repair is because it looks like an entirely new installation, whereas it is only a thinner layer being installed over existing. The EPDM chippings and binder are mixed on site and laid in situ.

Wet Pour Surface Renovation

A number of schools and nurseries across the United Kingdom have wetpour surfaces installed. We can complete wet pour surface renovation at fantastic prices and we will make certain you are happy with the overall transformation.

When carrying out a rubber safety surface overlay, we offer our clients a range of options. You may want to install a different colour or include a design within the area. Our team will be happy to speak through the various colours available and the costs of each.

As you may expect black EPDM rubber is the cheapest. A lot of clients have black wet pour installed with graphic inserts to improve the appearance.

If you are unsure about what colour to choose our team will be happy to offer advice. Make sure to fill in the contact form today for more information on colours and the renovation process.

Why Choose an Overlay?

You may be wondering ‘why should I choose an overlay when there are cheaper options available?’ or ‘would it not be best to completely rip out the surface and start new?’

We would generally recommend the overlay option, as you get benefits from both sides – it is not as expensive as a new installation, but it looks the same.

When replacing the surface you will need to pay for the removal of the existing surfacing along with 40mm (standard depth) of wetpour to be installed. This can become quite costly – especially if it is a large area because this will need to include labour fees.

With a wetpour overlay, you will not need to add on costs for removing the surface. Instead, we will lay over the existing surface and use this as a sub-base. Additionally, since we will be going over existing wetpour sub base, we will only need to install 15mm (standard) of wetpour, which will be much cheaper than 40mm.

Going back to the patch and band repair, although this is cheaper it is not necessarily the best option for you. With a band and patch repair you will be able to see where the new wet pour has been installed. Even if you have black wetpour presently and you get black again, the colour will still not be the same. This is because the sun may have faded the surface slightly.

People often put graphics in place of their tears and choose a completely different colour to border their existing area. However, this is entirely your choice!

Spongy Safer Pour Surfacing for Playgrounds

The spongy safer pour soft surface usually found in play areas is termed differently from person to person, for example someone may call it ‘rubber play area flooring’ whereas someone else my know it as ‘rubber tarmac for children’s playgrounds’. Within the industry this surface is known as ‘Wet-Pour’ safer surfacing, this offers an ideal playground surface and a safe environment for children to play on at schools and nurseries or at public play areas.

Spongy Safer Pour Construction

The construction of a spongy safer pour playgrounds surface involves mixing rubber granules with a strong adhesive resin and laying it in situ. Safer pour rubber playground surfacing is laid as a two tier system compromising of a safer pour base layer made out of 100% recycled SBR and a safer pour wearing course which is made out of rubber EPDM. The thickness of the base layer varies in size dependent on the required Critical Fall Height (CFH) with the thickness of the wearing course nearly always staying the same at a depth of 15mm, it is this wearing course that determines the colour of the surface and in turn the price.

The perfect sub-base for the safer pour rubber surface to be laid upon is macadam as it is an open textured, porous surface making it SUDS compatible. This means water is allowed to drain correctly through the system which decreases the risk of flooding and water damage.

Soft Surfaces Ltd can help you with any query you have regarding spongy safer pour surfacing, we offer a start to finish service, from quote to project completion.
