Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Long Jump Runway Installation in Chorley, Lancashire.
For this particular job the client was a school and got in touch with us interested in having a brand new long jump facility built onto their field. When we ran through the surface types we offer and the services we provide, we were getting to work before we knew it.
So with the long jump and triple jump runways, we install across the country we generally go for the polymeric surface, which is a flooring type made up of EPDM rubber. This is well regarded as being the best for athletics surfacing, as running and jumping on polymeric gives a perfect feel for this sport.
Furthermore, opting for polymeric also gives the clients the freedom of choosing any colour they’d like for their new long jump runway, as polymeric can be specified in practically any colour you want. This is ideal for those wanting to ensure their new sports facility matches or compliments its surroundings.
Additionally, we actually build a sand pit and sand pit cover for your new long jump as part of the installation process too, and the great thing with the sand pit covers we fit is that they too can be specified in absolutely any colour you wish!
At Soft Surfaces we take pride in the fact that we have become industry leaders at installing long jumps nationwide, and have been doing so for over two decades now, so you’ve come to the right place if this is a facility you’re looking to have built.
So here are the final photos of the work now that the long jump has been built, and you can see it looks absolutely brilliant. The client love their new facility, and were so pleased with the work we did for them.
Even though we do work nationwide, after carrying out a lot of jobs in the Lancashire area we rank in Google for the following phrases:
Rubber Long Jump Builders in Lancashire
Chorley Triple Jump Surfacing Company
Lancashire Long Jump Sand Pit Experts

Benefits Of Long Jump Runway Flooring In Chorley, Lancashire
Having a long jump runway installed in the Chorley, Lancashire area has many benefits these include:
Maintenance Free
Having a maintenance-free surface installed is always a bonus since not everyone has the time to maintain their long jump runways.
This also means it is a durable surface in all weather conditions which is what makes long jump runways so popular.
High-Impact Flooring
The shock pad that is installed underneath the surfacing is high-impact absorbing meaning when the athletes are running on the runway the surface is soft on their joints.
This then reduces the risk of injury on the runway.
Long Lasting
Long jump runways are extremely hard-wearing and long-lasting.
This makes the surfacing handy for schools since they will only be used every now and again they will last a very long time.

Both younger and older kids can benefit from Independent Play and Learning.
Independent Play is a learning process that can be more beneficial than any other type of learning.
Thinking and acting independently are two of the most vital skills any child can gain, and by nurturing this skill from a young age, we can create independent young adults that will continue to be confident and independent thinkers for the rest of their lives way after their school days.
Cultures are individualistic, and independence is an important part of our views on the world, so it is crucial to promote independent learning.
Teachers and parents have an extremely important role to play in the development of children but cannot remain next to their side every step they take, children have to become independent learners.
They are simply facilitators because one of the prerequisites of independent learning activities for kids is being able to work on your own, form complex grammar structures, solving problems with minimal guidance to build confidence.
This includes activities both in the classroom and outdoor learning areas that help students focus and help students reflect.
It is a question that arises often; how much help should I give my child or pupil if I also want to encourage independent learning activities?
Another question that is asked is; how can I be sure that my child or pupil is developing independence skills if I am not working closely with them?
There is a fine line between the two and faith in the child must be present while also being there to reassure students.
Independent Learning and Play are when children of all ages use their knowledge and imagination to create and play independent activities and have independent fun.
Independent learning is a method of gaining skills and knowledge through pretend Play, exploring different ideas, and creating new and unique ideas.
Experiencing these will lead to the development of an intelligent, confident, self-reliant and motivated individual that is capable of critical thinking and decision making.
Children that have more control over their learning and are therefore independent learners and thinkers tend to be higher on the confidence scale.
On the other hand, children that are provided with excessive help and support do not have the opportunity to think for themselves and prevents them from solving problems and working their way through difficulties.
The concept of learning independently has grown in popularity over recent years, and now it is common to see schools incorporate activities to promote independent learning.
It is a method of learning found throughout primary and secondary schools, and much of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) development is based on the independent development concept.
Studies have shown that young children learn the most through play. That is why allowing children to use their imagination and learn independent learning and play is vital to all areas of their development.
How Important is Feedback for Independent Learning?
Feedback is crucial, for example, written feedback on previous written work can help to build independence, as building independence is inextricably linked to building self-esteem.
For older kids, allowing them to do more independent chores and use their skills to do independent activities will enable them to build confidence.
Such as hoovering in the house, or cleaning their room. Responsibility can be learnt through pocket money and that they have to complete their chores before they get money.
For independent learning, it is also essential for children to be able to work independently on a class by class basis, whether that is in school or doing their homework.
This allows them to further confidence and reassure themselves that it is okay to get something wrong and get it right the next time.
Encouraging Independent Activities and Learning Skills
There are many ways that a child’s independent learning opportunities can be created.
As mentioned earlier, it can be pretty challenging to know how much assistance to provide and how much assistance not to provide and to find a balance is all about trial and error.
Learners identify their progress via good feedback focus in which they can monitor confidence levels, their own abilities and plan for future lessons.
Activities to Encourage Independence in School
Some great ideas to encourage independent activities and learning are to:
Present the child with an open environment – It is important for the child to have a free flow environment, where they can learn fluidly using different learning opportunities to gain independence. Allowing children to be in a free-flow environment, gives them their own choices.
Reward initiative – Positive feedback should be given when a child shows initiative. (This can be done through star reward boards, updates to the student’s record or written feedback)
Encourage exploration/research projects – Children should be able to choose what they learn about and discover what they enjoy. This could be done by drawing pictures or writing in a journal, which will also encourage and improve fine motor skills.
Imaginative Play – Encourage art and drama when discussing topics. For example, a play may help the students think more independently about the concepts being taught.
Encourage brainstorming – Allow children to formulate and ask their questions whilst presenting their ideas.
Focus on the positive – Don’t worry too much about things that aren’t working. Instead, just focus on which parts are going well, this will help reassure children not to lose confidence if they are struggling.
Letting Kids create- Allowing especially younger children the independence to create whatever they are thinking, this could be done by drawing using playdough or other craft materials.
Encouragement to be Responsible- Encourage children to help around the house, doing safe and straightforward chores. Making a chore list will give children a sense of responsibility, and for older kids can be a way to earn pocket money. And for younger children can gain treats like more IPAD time or chocolate/biscuit to reward them.
Integrating technology – Having children record themselves on their mobile phones completing a speaking task can boost their position on the confidence scale as they can listen back, evaluate exactly what they did or didn’t do so well. They can then create learning objectives to help them improve.
Independent thinking and thinking skills are a solid base for the development of great leadership skills, and by nurturing these skills from a young age, children can make sense of the world from personal experience and observations whilst making suitable, well-informed decisions.
Independent learning helps children think creatively, encourage curiosity and leads to much more meaningful discoveries than just being told the answer to something.
As children make mistakes through their own learning and within a safe environment, they will gain confidence which will help them build successful futures.
This also helps to contribute to their health and activity levels which you can read more about in this post.
The benefits of self-learning are well documented. Through working independently, a child learns how to learn, rather than being spoon-fed information, but they also understand the whole process rather than just the goal or end outcome.
The learning process is just as important as reaching the final goal, and often classrooms can restrict that process by placing it within four walls.
The self-confidence developed through independent learning activities for kids is accompanied by a sense of internal satisfaction, and they are more aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, passion and curiosity are two extremely important emotions and behaviour that can often be lost when things become methodical or routine.
What Are Some Examples of Independent Learning Activities?
Through learning independently, children can still use passion and curiosity to help achieve their goals via their own learning.
Another imaginative set of play equipment is an outdoor storytelling area, and these are great for encouraging children to listen and use their imaginations.
For older kids, learning independently teaches them the importance of responsibility and that it is okay to get something wrong and learn from it.
Working independently also teaches older children to use their own ideas and thoughts to solve a problem and not rely on someone else to fix their problem.
A child’s independence is very important and by creating a personal learning goal a student’s focus can be directed on their intended learning goal rather than elsewhere.
Some great ideas to do this could be giving them a journal, to write about whatever they like whether that be a diary or writing a story etc, or allowing them to solve their own problems with homework or schoolwork.
If you like you could always sit nearby to support your child and help them if they get really stuck or you can pair them with a child with similar personal learning goals.
It is also important for children to have the chance to be proud of their own work when taking part in their favourite independent activities.
The Benefits of Independent Play
Independent Play is one of the most important parts of early childhood. It can boost self-confidence, creativity and self-assurance. By letting children play on their own, it allows them to go into imaginative play and can promote independent learning.
It also provides mum and dad time to complete just what seems to be hundreds of chores whilst the kids are occupied with new fun activities. Without the need for Wi-Fi!
And the great thing is they can all be set up quickly, no matter if there has been school closures or the weekend. These activities can be easily done, with little supervision for long periods of time.
When a child plays, they learn more about themselves and their friends, but learning and play can go hand in hand a lot of the time. For example, performing dough disco with Play Dough allows children to have fun and dance along to songs whilst building on their fine motor skills.
Dough disco is a free resource that can be found on Youtube. For this activity, all you need is playdough.
Play Dough activities can also be done with stencils and used in all different imaginative Play, for example, role-playing in the kitchen, making other animals with stencils or using them to learn. Play Dough activities also encourage fine motor skills.
Independent Play also allows children to develop a strong sense of self-worth and independence.
To play independently is one of the most crucial elements in the early years, and all children should have the opportunity to learn through play. Independent Play alongside is vital for child wellbeing and self-growth.
When children play independently, they gain social independence, which means that they will be able to be comfortable in new situations which others may find scary. In addition, it allows them to use their imagination and use self-entertainment.
Independent Play also leads to imaginative play, this means the child will get used to critical thinking and thinking quickly on their feet.
What Are Some Examples of Independent Play Activities?
Independent Activities around the house for both little ones and older kids:
Sensory Play (using different textures and materials to allow children to have different sensory experiences)
Paint with water
Race Cars with or without a track
Puzzles
Using playdough to make cakes
Making pictures using playdough- Fireworks pictures or flowers etc
Having tea parties with stuffed animals
Draw pictures
For older children, independent activities can include:
Scavenger Hunt (either in the house or the garden) using stuffed animals, toys or treats.
Making and designing a treasure map and making binoculars with paper towel tubes
Writing a comic book
Building a boat.
Building Dens and Forts in the back garden
Journal writing- allowing children to write whatever they want they could write a story or just about their feelings
Making their own board game and playing board games
Building Jenga Blocks
Using a large sheet of paper to do a self-portrait.
Find books they enjoy and write about their favourite parts
Using educational apps on their iPad or tablet
All these activities allow children to play independently and also use their imagination throughout. There are so many ways to promote independence in both little ones and senior children, one of the most important things to do is follow their interests and let them explore (whilst being safe). It allows fun learning for the kids and at the same time some quiet time for mum and dad.
Outdoor Play Activities For Kids In School
Outdoors is seen as one of the best learning environments. The large open spaces and the array of natural resources encourage children to explore using their imagination and incorporate their problem-solving skills.
Giving children the tools necessary to explore at their own will and in their own time allows them to make their own discoveries. See our recent post on school playground markings to find out more about different floor designs.
Pupil-led outdoor play activities such as growing plants, wildlife spotting, bug hunting and pond dipping are all simple yet exciting activities that can be led by the children rather than the teacher.
These activities allow children to use their imaginations and involve elements of Play pretend into the process, all of which will help improve their creative thinking, grow their independence and confidence and develop their problem-solving.
Installing certain playground equipment will help children to learn whilst they play through activities like climbing, building dens and basic structures.
Using these types of playground equipment will also help encourage teamwork and allow children to provide each other with constructive feedback as they work alongside each other.
Outdoor play activities that are pupil-led not only provide great opportunities for developing skills independently, but they also have amazing benefits towards positive mental health; there have been numerous studies that have discovered the relationship between green spaces and good mental health.
Visit this post to learn more about how outdoor Play can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress in children.
Spending time outside is hugely beneficial for young people and the positive effects on mental health can work in favour for students, schools and benefits can work their way onwards and throughout communities.

Dyspraxia is a condition which affects physical coordination. It’s also known as developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The condition causes children to have issues with daily physical tasks. Sufferers tend to lack the motor skills expected for their age, which can lead them to act clumsily.
It’s a physical learning disability which doesn’t affect overall intelligence. But those affected have trouble with everyday tasks and actions. Activities requiring balance, muscle strength and coordination generally pose the biggest challenges. Visit the Dyspraxia Foundation to learn more.
Things children with dyspraxia might find difficult include:
Running
Jumping
Skipping
Climbing
Getting dressed
Eating
Brushing teeth
How Do You Know If a Child Has Dyspraxia?
There are a few things to look out for if you think your child or pupil might have dyspraxia. Early diagnosis is important in helping kids get the support they need. Below are some of the signs to be aware of:
Struggling to hold a knife and fork or eating messily
Difficulty holding pens and pencils
Avoiding taking part in playground games or PE
Problems with hopping, skipping and jumping
Trouble with organisation and completing tasks on time
Handwriting may appear less mature than other children of the same age
When it comes to playground games there are a few different types that can be beneficial for children with dyspraxia. Developing gross motor skills is an important part of dealing with DCD, and certain activities can help with this. It’s vital to provide an inclusive play area which is suitable for different levels of ability.
Check out some playground games for dyspraxia below.
Obstacle courses
Dancing
Imaginative games and activities
Balancing activities
Playground markings
Read on to learn more details about these different activities for children with dyspraxia.
Obstacle Courses
Equipment in the playground can be laid out in an obstacle course which children navigate around. This could include fixed equipment like trim trails, or movable equipment like hurdles and tunnels. Trim trails can improve physical development as well as being a fun and exciting feature in the play area.
These help to boost a range of gross motor skills including balance, muscle strength and coordination. The course can be altered to suit children’s different abilities and to help teachers measure development.
Dance
Dancing is a fun way to let children express themselves and do physical activity at the same time. You could encourage children to make up their own routines or simply freestyle and do whatever steps they like.
A playground stage is a great piece of equipment for something like this. They can also be used for putting on plays or other performances that pupils make up. Alternatively, playground markings are ideal for creating a dance space. These can include a range of shapes and instructions on the ground.
Giving children the option to make up their own routines makes the activity more fun. This makes less confident individuals want to participate more.
Imaginative Games
There are no limits when it comes to imaginative play for children. Not only can these improve thinking skills, they also help kids develop physically. Completing different actions such as hopping like a bunny, swinging like a monkey etc. create a more fun way to do physical activities.
Practising tasks like these will help to strengthen muscles and improve coordination over time. It’s a great thing for any child to do, not just those with dyspraxia.
Balance Activities
For dyspraxic children, balance and coordination can be particularly challenging. It’s a good idea to encourage simple balancing activities which help strengthen these skills.
Starting on flat ground may be the safest option for those with a physical condition. You could start off by asking the child to walk slowly with one foot in front of the other. Then you can gradually increase the challenge by moving onto elevated surfaces.
These could include bridges, balance beams, stepping stones and more. But always make sure that playground safety surfacing is available in the area to create a softer landing if there is a fall.
There are so many different types of playground markings you could have installed to your play area. These are great for educational games and stimulating children to come up with their own activities.
You can choose from a range of brightly coloured designs which are encouraging and fun for children. A few options include:
Hopscotch
Activity trails
Fitness courses
Mazes
Number and letter games
Geometric shapes
Footprints
These can help kids with balance and coordination. They are also good fun dyspraxia games on the playground. Some of these activities can also be helpful for children with Dyscalculia, another invisible disability that can affect play time.

There are many reasons why all weather pitch surfacing gets waterlogged and flooded and the first finger pointed is to the sports construction company who built the pitch. This is because the drainage system which has been put in might not be adequate and could be unsuitable for a particular climate if there is lots of rain therefore causing water to build up on the pitch surface. However the sports surface drainage problems are often due to a lack of maintenance which leads the sand and rubber infill to become contaminated or compacted.
My explanation on this is to compare the synthetic sports pitch to a bath with a plug hole to let the water to run out of the bath so that it never holds any water. Once the contractors have built the bath and the water runs out nicely everything seems fine. Well years down the line if you were to throw a load of mud into the bath and let it build up clogging the plug hole then over years the bath would stop letting the water drain away.
A similar thing happens when all weather pitch surfacing gets waterlogged as dirt and debris get stuck within the pores of the surface and block them up, preventing water from draining away.
In a nutshell regular maintenance is needed and the number one killer for these pitches is badly maintained systems where companies come and just drag brush the existing contaminated infill around the pitch and then throw some new silica sand on top to make it look nice. This type of maintenance doesn’t really help the sports pitch and it still requires a deep clean and rejuvenation.
After 7-10 years of the all weather pitch a rejuvenation maintenance visit is advised which includes removing the dirty sand from the sand filled synthetic turf pitch and replacing with new which gets rid of all the moss, algae and algal squidge which has built up and makes the all weather pitch drain freely again. Having this process carried out improves the performance qualities of the surface as well as preventing artificial grass flooding.
When Your All Weather Pitch Surfacing Gets Waterlogged
If your all weather pitch surfacing gets waterlogged and flooded on a regular basis and the playing qualities have become poor, you need to have the area deep cleaned or rejuvenated to make it safe and enjoyable to use again.
We have carried out this sort of work at synthetic grass pitches all over the UK so please contact us through our enquiry form with an area size and post code of your sports pitch facility so we can give you an accurate price quotation. Long Jump Pit Construction Athletics Track Costs are usually funded to many schools. The grants available are widespread within the UK as the IAAF and UK Athletics are trying to get the track and field athletics facilities across the United Kingdom in schools, leisure centres and sports clubs.
The long jump pit construction is usually infilled with a fine silica play sand between some rubber soft kerbing that is installed to the perimeter of the long jump pit. The athletics track runway for the long or triple jump is usually constructed the same way as an athletics track with a solid sub base to apply the polymeric sports surfacing onto otherwise known as a tartan surface, epdm surfacing or athletic track floor.
The costs can vary for a long jump runway construction dependent on the dimensions, the sizes, specifications and design of the track runway and also the quote can vary in price dependent on whether there is other works to be done at the same time like a throwing circle for discus, hammer or shot put or even a high jump fan that might need constructing.
Athletics Facility Contractors
Experts should do long jump building tasks, since they will likely have more experience. The first section of a long jump runway installation is to make the sub base works. If your groundworks are not done appropriately, it can cause plenty of complications. Excavating the prior surfacing is done initially, this involves taking the surface to the correct depth. The sub base surface will be made flat and also compressed, this will make the substrata strong. Then PCC concrete tips are installed for your perimeter and a geotextile membrane layer is put in. Having a geotextile membrane within the sub-base will prevent weeds growing. MOT type One stone is used and compacted within the sub base surfacing. Lastly, a tarmacadam layer is included, this will make the surface level, long-lasting and porous. When take off boards are being used, they’d be added in this process. Sand pits are recommended at the end of long jumps, we could set up this sort of area in a choice of styles and also specifications.
Long Jump Track Specifications
There’s 2 kinds of long jump surfacing. There is fake needlepunch materials or perhaps polymeric rubberised surface types. Both kinds of surfaces will be porous, this means they do not hold water. The type of surfacing you choose will have an effect on the long jump pit construction athletics track costs. Needlepunch surfaces are generally rolled out just like a carpet to the sub base and then connected by using glue. The synthetic materials will be combined through a needling process which makes strength. Fine sand infill will then get spread all through the carpeting to offer great performance characteristics. Many schools, as well as recreational establishments, get the needlepunch turf installed for long jump facilities. The needlepunch flooring is used as it’s much softer and more comfortable for young individuals. Polymeric EPDM surfaces are the preferred option for athletics clubs. As it is used by lots of pros and industry experts. The surface area is made of rubberized crumb and binder and afterwards rolled on top of the area.
It is always recommend that you complete schedule servicing for the long jump run-way to keep it in great condition. To get proactive with the repairs and maintenance, a long jump track cleansing plan should really be put together. This may prevent big and costly athletics track maintenance being required. A mild jet-wash, as well as sweeping, must be carried out regularly. Simply by undertaking this particular routine maintenance you may get eliminate dirt and also leaves so the pores don’t get blocked up. Always be certain an individual wear suitable boots and shoes when using the long jump surface to avoid impairments. If your athletics surface gets any kind of stains on there, warm water and also soap can be used to cleanse it. Unwanted weeds and moss can show up if routine maintenance is not carried out frequently, if it does, then a moss and also algae solution really should be used. It is necessary to not make use of any sort of oil based products, because this might cause surfacing problems. In cold conditions a rubberized edge shovel along with brush really should eliminate any ice or snow. Please do not make use of sand or grit within the athletics run up surface because these can harm the material. There are specialist de-icers for surfaces accessible if you’d like to make use of them.

4G Grass Football Pitch Sports Surface Synthetic Turf Carpet is a great marketing tool. At present there is no such thing as a 4G 4th generation sports surface even though the website is flooded with 4G synthetic turf then this actually is from old designs offering non-infill products back in the 80s so some could argue it is actually a 1g system. It is a marketing way of saying one company’s product is more advanced than another, with no proof or difference in performance or concept.
For more information on these synthetic pitch surface types, you can fill in our contact form and speak to an expert today. We are able to install sports pitches in a range of sizes and designs so don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Synthetic Turf Pitch Specifications
The confusion comes in that there was never a 1st generation or 2nd generation, and these terms have been applied retrospectively. So 1G refers to the original non-infilled surfaces, such as astro turf (which was the generic name) and now encompasses the non-infilled football surfaces popular in Switzerland. 2G refers to surfaces with sand in; mainly sand filled and sand dressed. The next generation of sports pitches refers to any surface which is long pile with sand and rubber infill. There are also surfaces known as hybrids, which are used for football and hockey, but in reality, are also artificial grass systems.
Advanced Artificial Grass Technology
There is also a move by manufacturers to go back to woven products, claiming these are the next advancement in technology. In reality, this manufacturing method was used in the early 1980s, is very slow and very expensive. There is no proven performance advantage as of yet. That’s not to say the fourth generation or 4G artificial grass isn’t going to come out in the future but people are trying to already saying this is in place with their company when actually from a recent FA document released in May 2012 it states: “..at the moment there is no such thing as 4G or 5G, terms sometimes used by salespeople. some manufacturers may promote non-infilled products, but these are actually earlier generation surfaces, as predominantly used for hockey.”
A 3G football pitch is a general term used to describe an artificial grass sports pitch. The specification is actually a synthetic turf sports surface containing sand and rubber infill to create the desired playing qualities. We can install these facilities at various UK locations including schools, clubs and public parks.
Installing 4G Football Pitches
The way forward is about systems, how they are installed and maintained, not to call exactly the same surface as most manufacturers offer, a 4G or 5G, which I have heard contractors are now claiming. The installation of the synthetic sports pitch is crucial nowadays and the correct procedures need to be implemented with the correct machinery and then once the sports facility is constructed, the sports surface maintenance needs to be regularly carried out to meet the playing characteristics for the lifespan of the ATP / STP or MUGA ball court.
Please fill in our contact form for further information on these 4G grass football pitch products. We’ll get back to you with all the details you need along with details to carry out your project. The different products vary depending on your budget and the type of facility you want to create. We’d be happy to take a look at all of the options and help you decide what would be best for your school or club.
