Athletics Landing Sand Pit Covers

Athletics landing sand pit covers are now an essential part of sand pit maintenance and Health & Safety. Sand pit covers are normally supplied on a bespoke basis as there does not appear to be a standard or specified size for these products. However, Triple Jump sand pit covers are normally supplied in dimensions of 9m x 3m as this is the normal design / specification. These again, can be supplied to suit any project size.

Athletics landing sand pit covers help to protect the existing track runway from sand being distributed or left on the runway as this can have a long term affect on the tartan surfacing due to the sand blocking the porous nature of the Polymeric surfacing. Having an athletic track sand pit cover can also add a little bit of security to protect against strong winds, animal faeces and falling debris from trees and plants. The Athletic long jump or triple jump runway landing sand pit covers are made from a woven polyester and have poles which are 42mm diameter. However, these can be made to suit most budget / cost requirements subject to the customers funding, budgets available.

Outdoor Sports Surfacing Slip Tester Insitu Testing

Throughout the UK many outdoor sports areas are very slippery and this is mainly due to the fact of moss / algae growing on the flooring which gives a waxy top layer that is slippy and this can be very dangerous to the players on the tennis courts, basketball courts, netball pitches and MUGA facilities.

It is always paramount to make sure all sporting facilities achieve maximum performances from their surfacing but also keep a safe floor for the children, visitors and players. It is a duty of every school, leisure centre, college, university or sports club to take reasonable steps to ensure the players, kids and children can enjoy safe playing characteristics and measuring any health and safety issues.

According to the HSE the results show that one in three non-fatal major injuries come from slips, falls and trips in the UK and it only takes a fraction of a second to slip with consequences being broken bones or other critical injuries. With the current climate you have to ask yourself would you like to be the victim of someone slipping on your surfacing area and them taking you to court to be sued.

The recommendation for this is obviously to take all measures available to reduce risk of slippage and slipping. These measures would include the following items :

(1) Making sure the flooring is kept clean by water jetting, pressure cleaning and free from moss, algal squidge, algae and contamination

(2) Making sure you carry out a yearly BS7976 pendulum test to make sure the slip resistance is safe for the players

(3) If the test shows to be outside the parameters set out by HSE, ITF or sports accreditation level to take measure like applying a new anti slip coating paint or maintenance rejuvenation

Many sports governing bodies like the ITF for tennis courts have set out standards that need to be met for full safety to the floors and to keep performance playing characteristics to their maximum. If you would like to check details on the slip resistance like the TRRL measures set out for sports use then please contact us and we will explain more in detail.

If you are still unconcerned about what measures could be taken against you in court then you might want to know it is actually LAW and FACT that you have a duty of diligence to reduce chance of injury so if you have documentation to show you have maintained the surfacing to the multi use games areas or sports pitches with a yearly test result then this will stand you up in good stead with the judges however if a children, player or visitor decides to proceed with court actions and you have taken no measures with testing the surfaces then this could leave you wide open to being sued in court.

The slip tester is under 1k to have carried out and not only does it come with a report it also comes with recommendations and consultancy to how these works are best to be rectified whether it is resurfacing, rejuvenation, just a simple jet wash clean or applying a new colour coating anti slip paint. Find Out More

It has been proven that taking part in outdoor activities improves health and happiness. This goes for both children and adults, so these facilities have lots of different benefits.

Gym Equipment Outdoors

Schools often choose to have different types of play equipment in outdoor areas so that the pupils can be active and get fresh air during break time. This helps to increase energy levels and makes it easier for the kids to learn and concentrate during lessons.

Overall happiness and well-being is also improved by outdoor activity. This is therefore why the external gym equipment is popular in community parks. People who are looking to improve their lifestyle and become healthier can get access to fitness equipment in an outdoor space. They can use this without having to sign up for an expensive gym membership.

Participating in any type of exercise has been shown to improve mental health and relaxation. Doing these activities outside boosts the benefits even more. With dedicated outdoor gym equipment for use by the public or for school students, more people can enjoy feeling healthier and increasing their activity.

External Fitness Machines

A range of different exercise machines can be installed to create an outdoor gym facility that suits whoever will be using it. Popular features include treadmills, stationary bikes and cross trainers for core fitness, as well as resistance machines and weights for strength.

Things like gym bars are also installed as these can be used for Calisthenics workouts. This is an activity that focuses on using your own bodyweight with minimal equipment. You can have other features like activity trails and obstacle courses. These help to develop a range of skills like balance, agility, climbing and strength.

Designs for Outdoor Spaces

Depending on the type of design you want and the amount of outdoor space you have, there are plenty of different options available. You could decide just to have a range of standard gym machines, or you could choose a number of different features to set up a large outdoor fitness area. We offer several other types of outdoor play area equipment for different activities.

Military training facilities can even use this equipment to set up an assault course with things like:

  • Traversing walls
  • Crawl nets
  • Balance beams
  • Tyre hops

Alternatively, other products are perfect for children’s play areas to allow them to develop fundamental physical skills through fun activities. These can even help children with physical learning difficulties to become more confident. See our post on playground games for children with dyspraxia to learn more about these.

We can install specialist rubber mulch surfacing for the gym area to create a more comfortable flooring surface.

Keeping Fit Through Life

The external gym machines are great for schools and colleges. They allow children to have an introduction to fitness equipment in a familiar environment. This could then encourage them to join a gym and stay active in their adult life if they enjoyed doing the different workouts.

Studies of UK schools have found that many children have low levels of activity and this is contributing to poor health and obesity. With an improvement in school sports equipment and community facilities, it’s easier for children and other members of the community to increase their exercise levels.

Health Benefits of Outdoor Exercise

Taking part in regular exercise in an outdoor environment has many advantages to overall health and quality of life. Sunlight is a natural source of Vitamin D which promotes healthy bones and teeth. The fresh air also contributes to relaxation and happiness. People will often be more likely to continue outdoor sports over an extended period of time. More than they would continue working out in an indoor gym.

Contact Us

This is because outdoor activities like team games are generally more enjoyable and this encourages people to continue them regularly. Any form of exercise is beneficial for anyone looking to manage their weight, or simply improve their own personal fitness. So an activity that’s enjoyable and easier to stick to will always have more health benefits.

Several people can use the outdoor gym machines at the same time. This means you can enjoy being active with your friends and family, or even make new friends with other people. If you have children and you’re trying to involve them in sports and exercise, a fitness facility at a local park is a great way to do this as a family. Through spending time with others and meeting new people, there is a range of mental health benefits. These are often both short and long term.

Play Equipment Budgets

If you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford a gym membership, these outdoor facilities allow you to get the same benefits for free. This along with the fresh air, social interaction and overall health advantage makes it easy to understand why external fitness facilities are becoming more popular. By having different types of equipment in school play areas, the kids can make the most of their outdoor environment by enjoying different games and being active.

How Playing Outside Can Reduce Stress and Anxiety

There is an increasing number of primary school children who are dealing with stress and anxiety at school. This is due to a variety of different factors including the pressures of school and the social expectations children face.

Having a positive and interactive outdoor space can help kids relax and enjoy themselves more, making them able to concentrate better in lessons. In this post we’ll discuss how playing outside can reduce stress and anxiety for children of all ages. Check out our previous article on inclusive play equipment if you are looking for ways to create a more diverse playground.

Contact Our Team

Why Are Children Anxious?

A lot of things can cause children to feel anxious or stressed, particularly at school. Here are a few of the main reasons why a child might have feelings of anxiety:

  • Separation – It’s common for younger children to feel worried and scared when separated from parents or carers.
  • Phobias – Some kids may develop phobias in early life which make them feel anxious. These could be things like heights, spiders, water, the dark etc.
  • Social situations – A lot of children feel shy and anxious in social situations especially if it’s a new environment, such as when they first start school.
  • A particular event – Sometimes specific events can trigger anxious feelings for a child. For example, they may have hurt themselves on the playground, been involved in a car accident or something else which has caused them distress.
  • A significant change – Something like moving house, parents divorcing or starting a new school could make a child worry and not feel confident.

It’s also important to remember that while stress and anxiety can be brought on by these factors and many more, it can also have no specific cause at all. It may seem difficult to understand, but each person’s mental health is different, and support should be made available to all children. Visit this page from the NHS to find out more about helping children cope with anxiety.

Improving Mental Health with Play

Studies have shown that there are many benefits of active play when it comes to improving mental health. Roughly 1 in 5 children up to the age of 11 will experience some kind of mental health problem, with anxiety and stress being the most common.

Getting fresh air and being active can help to reduce the hormones commonly associated with feeling anxious. By creating an interactive play space with a variety of games, you are giving each child something to focus on and enjoy. This also promotes the release of hormones such as serotonin and oxytocin which make you feel calmer and happier. Check out this post for more information on how active lifestyles can improve health.

Sometimes a loss of control can cause kids to feel worried and unhappy. By taking part in an activity, using equipment or cooperating with others, they can take control and choose how they want to play. This also helps with forming relationships and making friends who can help them feel more relaxed.

Active Playground Ideas

A number of different options are available when creating a play area to help reduce stress and boost pupils’ moods. Here are a few active playground ideas you could consider for your school or nursery:

  • Trim Trails and Obstacles – These consist of things like climbing walls, rope bridges, balance beams and monkey bars. Using equipment like this helps develop strength and motor skills, as well as giving a feeling of accomplishment when you get to the end.
  • Daily Mile Surface – An extremely popular activity which schools are now incorporating into each day. 15 minutes of walking or running each day helps create a positive attitude and increases concentration in lessons. We can install a variety of Daily Mile surfacing types if you are looking to install one of these facilities.
  • Outdoor Gym Equipment – Different pieces of apparatus help develop children’s muscles, and exercise helps with the release of happy endorphins.
  • Activity Boards – These can include things like games mounted on the wall and chalkboards where children can write and draw.
  • Musical Instruments – A number of musical items could be placed outside on the playground including drums, xylophones, bells and many more. These allow kids to be creative and express themselves through the music they can play.
  • Sand and Water Play – Kids can experience different textures and materials as well as building sand castles or channelling water. Loads of sand and water activities can be done on the playground.

All these things can be incorporated into your outdoor space to encourage pupils to be active and take part in different games. This helps focus their minds and reduce feelings of worry or stress.

Encouraging Mindfulness in Schools

Being more mindful can help both children and adults to be aware of their emotions and deal with difficult feelings. Encouraging mindfulness in schools has plenty of benefits as it improves emotional development and even boosts concentration in lessons. Studies also show that this can even reduce instances of bullying on the playground. Find out more on Anti Bullying Week 2019 here.

Mindfulness may be achieved through a range of activities including individual games and playing in groups. Imaginative play is a great way for kids to be creative and work together or alone to make something using their imaginations.

Managing Anxiety through Play

As you can see, there are many ways that playing outside can reduce stress and anxiety in children. Lots of situations can cause worry and negative feelings for primary school pupils. It’s important to support them and give them a positive place to express themselves and release their energy.

Managing anxiety through play can be very effective for all ages and it also helps with developing physical skills. You can choose from a diverse range of equipment and designs to ensure you cater for different pupils.

Feel free to get in touch with us if you are interested in upgrading your play area with new surfacing or equipment and we’d be happy to provide a quote.

Activities to Teach Kindness on the Playground

Kindness is one of the most important things we can teach children. There are several activities you can do on the playground which encourage kids to be kind to each other.

During their nursery years, most children can only see things from their own perspective. This means they can’t always understand someone else’s feelings. By encouraging empathy, children can develop important life skills outside of the curriculum.

Studies show that people who are kind to others are actually healthier and happier in life. But what activities can schools and nurseries do to help kids become more compassionate?

Contact Our Team

Games Which Promote Kindness

There are many games and activities which promote kindness and cooperation between children. Check out some ideas below:

Role-Play Activities

Role-playing games offer kids the chance to make up their own scenarios and play different characters. Things like shopkeepers and customers, or doctors and nurses are popular games. These will help children learn how to empathise with others and be kind.

Pieces of equipment like outdoor stages and mini shop counters are great for these activities. Kids can use their imaginations and take what they have learnt into real-world situations. There are plenty of different designs and equipment you could use to enhance your play area.

Team Building Exercises

Working in a team is a great way for pupils to cooperate with each other and listen to different viewpoints. When working towards a common goal, children need to communicate with each other and decide the best course of action.

Some examples of team building games include:

  • Team quiz hosted by the teacher
  • Building an outdoor den
  • Acting out scenes on stage
  • Making up and telling stories
  • Sporting activities like football, netball and hockey

These games encourage teamwork and communication which are vital social skills to learn.

Understanding Each Other’s Emotions

Up to the age of 4, most children can’t understand other people’s emotions very well. It may sound bad, but young kids are programmed to only focus on their own needs and point of view.

When they begin primary school, these skills improve as they relationships with others. Schools can offer plenty of activities to teach kindness on the playground during lessons and break times.

Roughly 20% of children report experiencing bullying at school, and this can have a range of negative effects. This is why encouraging kids to be kind and empathetic to each other from a young age is so important.

Voicing Negative Feelings

Sometimes playing games on the playground can lead to fall-outs or disputes between children. While these situations are not nice to see, they can offer important learning opportunities.

Take the pupils aside and ask them what they’re feeling – Angry? Sad? Confused? Worried? Asking them to describe how they feel helps them understand each other’s point of view.

They can then talk it out and resolve the situation. Next time they’ll be able to move on and cooperate when playing the same game. This is a crucial part of social development which kids can take into adult life.

Summary

A playground is a great place for kids to learn important life lessons outside of the classroom. Practical activities promote teamwork and help young kids to learn empathy. They also promote feelings of respect for each other.

There are lots of ways to teach kindness on the playground through many different activities. Schools and nurseries can encourage a positive attitude and help reduce instances of bullying by making this a top priority.

Benefits of Artificial Clay Tennis Court Surfacing

ClayCourt Pro is the premium artificial clay tennis court surface specification with all the playing characteristics of natural clay but without all the heavy and costly maintenance requirements.

Get in Touch

The system used is ITF approved category 2 medium/slow pace. So what are the advantages of ClayCourt Pro artificial clay tennis courts?

  • Looks like natural clay tennis court surfaces with the same colour infill used and ball marks visible making it aesthetically appealing on the eye.
  • Slides like natural clay surfacing which is crucial as part of the design in this innovative ClayCourt Pro product because creating the perfect sliding specification is paramount to clay surfaces.
  • Plays like natural clay tennis courts as it provides the surface speed, bounce and player comfort tennis players expect from a clay tennis surface.
  • ITF category 2 endorsed artificial clay tennis court surface specification stimulates natural clay and has been tested to meet the ITF classified court pace 2 medium/slow.
  • An unbound surface resulting in less muscle stress which is great for tennis players because it reduces the risk of injuries which are linked with hard-surfaced courts.
  • Low maintenance surfacing which is key as it makes the sustainability of the courts easier and helps to lower the overall costs of running the facility.
  • All weather surface and the porous system prevents the limitations that cushioned acrylic surfaces, natural clay surfacing or natural grass with varying climate conditions. The ClayCourt Pro has been designed to not compact and its rapid drainage qualities allow play to commence during all weather conditions without the surface being affected.
  • A consistent year-round playing surface as the artificial clay tennis court material is made up of two components which are synthetic carpet and sand infill.
  • Suitability for all indoor tennis requirements as during the design process of the premium ClayCourt Pro we had to consider both indoor and outdoor usage so as the specification is sand infilled then it does not need to be watered and unlike the sliding on natural clay this specification creates no dust from the players sliding.
  • Line markings are inlaid to the artificial clay tennis courts making this element maintenance free and therefore saving tennis clubs on the heavy maintenance costs compared to natural clay surfacing.
  • No watering and no dust is a big advantage because this eliminates the high irrigation costs of regularly having the tennis courts watered to enable first class playability. As the synthetic clay courts are sand infilled this means the no dust element is great for indoor clubs.
Tennis Court Repair Painting Maintenance

Historically clay tennis courts have been referred to as very expensive on the running costs and require extensive maintenance procedures compared to other tennis court surfacing specifications to enable first-class play. However the ClayCourt Pro innovative artificial clay tennis court specification now gives all clubs a totally different angle. This is because clay surfacing is a premium tennis flooring option and your club can’t afford not to have one with this statistic below transforming your players into champions:-

88 percent – The percent of top 10 players who learned to play on clay

Compared to…

12 percent – The percentage of top 10 players who learned to play on hard court

Now we have explained the advantages of artificial clay tennis courts you could ask the question why ClayCourt Pro as opposed to other specifications? Well ClayCourt Pro has been designed over a number of years and the synthetic carpet is a curly yarn which we feel is a premium system as it allows the sand to be encapsulated within the fibres, this adds stability and accurate levels to the overall playing surface.

Find Out More

The sand infill used is terracotta colour to match natural clay and this is produced by an intense heating and baking process which bakes the sand grains to replicate the accurate colour. This process is much higher quality than colour coating because it ensures the retention of its colour and gives great UV stability for the finished product.

Baking the sand to give the brightly coloured appearance is a much better method than dying it as no colour will come off and permanently stain clothes which can often happen with the dyed sand. The sand specification is also carefully selected as it offers a load bearing capability, provides slip resistance and the shape of the sand grains aids drainage values helping the surface to drain rapidly so the all-weather clay courts are playable all year round.

Below you can see a video of our team installing a synthetic clay surface from start to finish:

Acrylic Sports Court Spraying Anti Slip Paint Surface

Acrylic Sports Court Spraying Anti Slip Paint Surface is installed onto macadam type 1 and type 2 MUGAs throughout the UK. The acrylic anti slip paint is available is a selection of colours and the most common are red, blue and green. The coatings are applied by our specialist team, and we aim to make the process as efficient and cost effective as possible for you.

Our team can apply these spray coatings to various sports facilities. We have worked at many leisure centres, schools and colleges to improve the appearance and functionality of sports courts. Adding the non slip coat improves grip and makes it safer for players running around on the surface. It also brightens up the facility as we offer a selection of colours for you to choose from. You could have a single colour or opt for a two tone design depending on your preference.

Ball Courts

The ball courts, which are often used for sports such as Basketball, Tennis and Football, can be built to suit almost any size, specification and budget, have these coatings applied to help them achieve TRRL ratings of 60 and 75. Their macadam surface which does not have the anti-slip coating applied is known as a Type 1 MUGA. You can also have a Synthetic All Weather Artificial Grass surface and an EPDM: Polymeric Surface MUGA. These types of acrylic anti-slip coatings and MUGA surfacing is often found in building specifications – Q26 and many of these surfaces have game line markings installed with the same type of anti-slip coatings.

MUGA Court Anti Slip Paint

One of the most common sporting facilities which we install this paint is a MUGA court surface. This is also known as a multi-use games area as you can play a number of sports in the same place. As well as spraying the whole area in an acrylic sports court paint in the colour of your choice, we also apply line-markings. These can be done for whichever sports you want to play, the ones we generally apply will be:

  • Tennis
  • Netball
  • Basketball
  • Football

The multi-use games area is an ideal sports court where space is limited for the children and kids to play. In the UK many old tennis courts are being refurbished into these multi-use facilities. People do this to make the most out of the sports facility as it can be used much more. Often these will have sport rebound fencing to the perimeter with recessed goals and basketball hoops.

Applying the Acrylic Coating

The acrylic sports colour coating is applied by an airless spray in two coats. We apply it in different directions to get the whole court surface covered completely. After several years a flash coat or a resurfacing can be applied to make these like new again. We offer a range of sports facility maintenance services to help with this if you require a repair.

Take a look at the video below to see one of our projects where our team painted a sports court. The existing facility was a dull tarmac surface with fading line-markings. We painted over the whole area in vibrant orange colour and added white and yellow line markings for different sports.

As you can see the whole area was transformed and now has a much more exciting look. It also functions better as a sporting facility as the non-slip paint adds grip and creates better traction.
If you have any questions about these services don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We have worked around the UK with various clients to complete this work.
