Waterlogged Synthetic All Weather Pitch Solutions

Over time, and without an adequate maintenance schedule, artificial grass sports pitches can start to lose their porosity and begin holding water. This can have a detrimental effect on the performance qualities of the sport surface and can also make it unsafe for use. Waterlogged synthetic all weather pitch solutions are a corrective maintenance process that basically cleans or extracts the contaminated infill from the artificial carpet and restores the surface back to its original performance capabilities.

Waterlogged Synthetic All Weather Pitch

Synthetic 2G or 3G all weather sports pitches can become flooded and waterlogged for all kids of reasons, however the most common reasons are compaction and contamination of the sand and rubber infill layer due to a lack of proper maintenance. The sand infill of a 2G sports pitch and the rubber infill of a 3G sports pitch is installed to enhance the overall performance quality of the artificial all weather surfacing. Installed deep within the grass pile, the sand and rubber keeps the turf fibres upright and improves how the surface plays during training sessions and competitive matches. If the sports pitch infill is not looked after properly it can become compacted, where the particles get stuck together within the synthetic grass surfacing and cause the system to lose its porosity. The sand and rubber infill layers can also become contaminated by moss and algae which grows within the artificial turf surface if it is not kept clean, this also leads to a loss of porosity in the artificial sports pitch system. Once the artificial sports grass has compaction and contamination within the infill which is moss, algae and algal squidge then it starts to slow down the drainage leading to a waterlogged synthetic all weather pitch. With poor drainage the artificial sports pitches start to hold water and any surfaces with standing water makes the sports flooring become dangerous, slippery and loses its ‘all weather’ capabilities. A sports surface regeneration, restoration or all weather pitch rejuvenation helps get the MUGA court, full sized hockey pitch, full size football field or training pitches get back to almost ‘as new’ where the drainage allows any rainwater to flow through the surfacing as the full construction should be porous. Synthetic turf sports pitch rejuvenation involved extracting the dirty and contaminated sand and rubber infill and replacing it with a clean new layer. This brings back the permeability of the surface and improves the performance characteristics for players.

Artificial Sports Grass Maintenance

In order to keep your synthetic turf pitch safe and performing well, it’s important to carry out cleaning and maintenance on a regular basis to prevent it from becoming contaminated and waterlogged. This could be as simple as regular drag brushing and getting rid of any debris from the surface to prevent it from making the grass fibres dirty. However if the artificial grass becomes damaged or starts holding water, it may be necessary to carry out more maintenance such as repairs and rejuvenation to bring back to original safety and performance qualities. If you would like any costs on deep cleaning maintenance schedules, rejuvenations, regenerating or even resurfacing of your sports surfaces all weather pitch then please use our contact form to tell us about your enquiry.

Alternatively you can visit our website on http://softsurfaces.co.uk/ which will have several blogs showing the details as to why your pitch might not be making most of its full potential. Please let us know if you have any questions about a waterlogged synthetic all weather pitch or any other sport surfacing maintenance issues. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic!

All Weather Pitch Sports Surfaces

All-weather pitches are synthetic sports pitches constructed in artificial grass. These sports surfaces can be line marked for multi-use sports so one court can be used for a football pitch, rugby pitch, basketball court, netball court, and hockey pitch. All of the old fashioned astroturf surfaces will eventually be replaced with a new 3G (third-generation) MUGA (multi-use game area).

Feel free to get in touch with our team if you have any questions about these specifications or the costs for this work. Just complete the contact box on this page and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can to talk about prices and designs.

Refurbishing All Weather Pitch

The refurbishment of an all-weather surface involves firstly the uplift and removal of the existing Astroturf all-weather pitch. This is done using a Turf Muncher removal machine. The Turf muncher is a machine designed for the rip-up and replacement of synthetic turf all-weather pitch surfaces. Synthetic turf sports pitches and artificial sports surfaces have developed over the years from old astroturf plastic surfacing to innovative 3G sports facilities.

The main issue is the landfill of old astroturf surfacing and this is where the turf muncher separates itself from its competition. The Turf Muncher is able to uplift and remove the synthetic turf, remove the sand and rubber infill from the artificial grass then roll up the surfacing so it can be reused or recycled.

Upgrading Sports Facilities

A sports pitch refurb is an upgrade generally designed and cost because of the ability to create revenue from renting the sports facility out. The refurbishment is upgrading an old astroturf sports surface and refurbishing to a third generation synthetic grass. Upgrading the sports pitch whether it is a football field, rugby field, hockey pitch, netball pitch, basketball pitch or tennis court can be done to fit the customer’s timescales and can be completed to meet the funding, budget and quote. The refurbishment is needed when the existing all-weather pitch has lived its lifespan and the synthetic turf is not meeting the playing characteristics.

Get in Touch

Sometimes towards the end of the lifespan of the synthetic astroturf surfacing, you can rejuvenate the surface within a sports maintenance package that will get a few extra years out of the playing surface as the infill is cleaned and any contamination is taken out with the full rejuvenation. The removal of sand infill is usually needed because the fibres and yarn of the artificial grass will be wearing away and if the sand infill isn’t removed then it will be like a beach sports surface.

Installing All Weather Surfacing

Once the synthetic turf is ready to be ripped up, uplifted, removed, recycled, refurbished, upgraded and resurfaced then we can help with the design, planning, quote, price, costs, specification, budget, construction, maintenance, dimensions, size of pitch whether it is an 11 a side football pitch, 7-a-side football court, 5-a-side football area or even help and assistance with the funding of the sports pitch renovation.

Another popular choice by councils, architects and leisure centres is to upgrade, clean, resurface tennis courts into MUGAs and multi-use games areas. The reason for this is because an old macadam surface can easily be renovated by cleaning the surface and then overlaying the existing surfacing with synthetic turf or a polymeric surface. Both are fine for tennis playing characteristics and meet other requirements on sports courts like football, mini tennis, basketball and netball. Multi-use games areas are known as multi educational games areas, sports courts, multi-sports arenas, small side footy ball courts and MUGAs.

Why is My Synthetic All Weather Pitch Holding Water and Flooding?

Synthetic all weather pitches may be holding water and flooding due to lack of maintenance or incorrect maintenance services being carried out.

Many maintenance visits in the UK consist of a tractor pulling a drag brush around and topping up sand to the top of the sports surfacing which people you might be shocked to find out is wrong.

Every artificial sports pitch and synthetic all-weather pitch inevitably will get a build-up of contamination which could be sporns, moss, algae and algal squidge. This build up clogs the infill and makes the surfacing poor draining hence the holding water.

The maintenance contractor needs to remove the contaminated infill or clean this regularly to extend the lifespan of the pitch and not just throw new sand on top of the contaminated infill because this won’t solve any problems whatsoever.

It is inevitable that after 8-10 years you will need to have a sports surfacing rejuvenation which will remove and replace the existing infill making the drainage back to new but without regular maintenance or correct maintenance, this process could be needed in as little as 5 years.

MUGA Pitch Services

We offer a wide range of services including the construction and maintenance of these outdoor games areas. We have worked with many schools, colleges and local leisure centres to install multipurpose facilities which are perfect for many activities. The costs for this type of project do vary but we would be happy to offer you some helpful advice.

Okay, so we all know that Health & Safety has become a little…overzealous over the last few years. If they want to put a poster up using pins, teachers have to wear safety goggles. (I’m not kidding, by the way). We’ve all sat and listened to Grandad rant about how ridiculous all the regulations are while he regales us with stories of ‘how he used to play in the rubble of bombed-out houses after the Second World War and no harm ever came to him,’ but times are different now.

Talk To Us

When it comes to your little one’s safety in the playground, then you can understand the need for strict guidelines. We sometimes forget that children’s bodies are still growing and a broken arm at this early stage of life could result in the bone healing unnaturally causing complications later in life.

Combine this with the culture of being suing for the smallest of things, and it’s in your interest to make sure that a playground is as safe as it can possibly be. We can provide more information on play area safety surfaces if necessary, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The Project

Take our recent project at a primary school in Brighton as an example. The play area was much like any other school’s; a climbing net and three climbing walls but no safety flooring. While the equipment itself was in good condition, the flooring was severely lacking in redeeming features.

Dirt, weeds, pebbles, stones, and, most worrying of all, large blocks of concrete where the foundations for the equipment had been poured. Now that’s all fine and dandy if you’re on an SAS assault course, but this is in a school playground. If Little Billy decides one day that he’s Spider-man and he tests his super jumping abilities from the top of the climbing wall onto this surface, you’re going to have a problem. And possibly a solicitor’s letter.

Restoration

The team at Soft Surfaces replaced the nightmare-inducing flooring with a far safer rubber mulch. The mulch is made from old shredded truck tyres bonded together in a flexible resin that resembles traditional wooden bark chips. The beauty of the rubber mulch is that your child doesn’t come home with half a forest stuck to their socks and because the mulch is made from recycled tyres, it’s good for the environment (and Little Billy’s back) too. It also won’t attract insects or blow away like Dorothy and Toto at the first sign of a stiff breeze as traditional mulch is prone to doing.

Colour options are plentiful, the most popular ones being green and brown which helps the mulch blend into natural surroundings, but other colour combinations are available.

Our client chose a vibrant green finish which really brought the area to life after the unsightly mess that was there before. Because the mulch is bonded and sealed, it should retain that vibrant colour for many years to come too.

Please have a look at the video below if you are interested in seeing how our team restored this playground:

The rubber-bonded mulch shred was laid inside a pre-existing bordered space which provided a superb, neat finish, but the massive advantage the mulch has is that it’s also able to be laid directly straight on to grassy surfaces and it will stay put. It can be laid directly on top of mud, tarmac, even unsightly flooded areas, and because the mulch is permeable, that area won’t flood again. No expensive groundwork to pay out for, flooding solved AND it looks better? Win/Win.

Yet another advantage of the versatility of this material is that it meant that the existing equipment could stay where it was and we could work around it. So, no breaking ground to remove the climbing walls and nets, no smashing up of foundations and no pouring fresh ones which would keep the area off-limits until it had dried and set.

The climbing equipment simply stayed in situ and the rubber mulch was installed around it. This helped us to keep costs down for the school and the inconvenience of the equipment being out of action was kept to a minimum.

The Finished Result

Once the mulch had set, the school had a surface that was colourful, weather-resistant, durable and, most importantly, safe for the children. The surface should require only minimal future maintenance and feedback from the school praised our high standard of work and how we had taken the time to actually explain the process to them rather than just get on with the job.

We asked them to rate us out of five on our communication, Health & Safety, tidiness & cleanliness, and finally, the quality of the work itself. Their reply? A full house, sweeping fives across the board. Can anyone else hear the Strictly Come Dancing music? No? Just me then…

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Colourful Play Area Surfacing in Sheffield.

So for this job the client got in touch wanting to have a safety surface installed for their play area that they could customise and make their own. We got back to them explaining the wetpour surfaces we fit, and were soon booked in on site to install.

Wetpour is the perfect surfaces for outdoor playgrounds here in the United Kingdom, and is the most popular play area surface we fit. We’ve been installing wetpour for over 2 decades, and do so nationwide for jobs of all shapes and sizes. So lets run through what makes wetpour so great:

Firstly, wetpour is a surface type that is arguably the best option for safety. This is because wetpour is made up of an EPDM rubber, giving it a spongy feel that soaks up falls and trips really well. This is one big reason why many opt for wetpour flooring.

Secondly, wetpour’s rubber qualities mean that the surface type is also porous, and therefore is much better equipped to deal with the weather that the UK has to throw at it. This makes it ideal as an outdoor playground surface.

Thirdly, wetpour is heavily customisable, with the option to choose from basically any colour or colours you wish. With wetpour, you can also choose from a massive range of graphics to be fitted too, from shapes and games to custom logos, it’s totally up to you. All of this can be planned with us prior to the install.

So there’s the main reasons why wetpour is arguably the best choice for playgrounds here in the UK.

You can see from these photos now that the work we carried out for this particular job has been completed, and looks really amazing in the multiple colours they specified. The client was so pleased with what we did for them, and with their new outdoor playground.

Multi Lane Polymeric Rubber Long Jump Installation

This video below shows our team installing a multi lane long jump runway using polymeric rubber surfacing. The project was carried out in St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Multi Lane Polymeric Long Jump Construction in St Albans.

For this actual install, the client had a large field area, and this was subject to quite large flooding during our more rainy months.

They specified that they were looking for a new long jump facility to be built on the field, but expressed the need for a surface that could be used in any season. We explained the services we could offer them, and before we knew it we were on site cracking on.

So for this job we went for a polymeric surfacing to use for the long jump runway. This flooring is a perfect choice for outdoor athletics surfacing due to the fact that it’s a porous system, which also helps for areas vulnerable to flooding such as this one.

This enables the long jump area to be used all year round, regardless of the weather conditions, making it a brilliant surface type for outdoor facilities here in the United Kingdom.

Polymeric can also be fitted in almost any colour choice you want, and its rubber buildup makes it a surface extremely well suited to running and jumping on, perfect for long jumps and triple jumps.

Here at Soft Surfaces we also install a sand pit, and the sand pit cover for your long jump area too, and the cover can also be selected in many different colour combinations.

We’ve been installing long jumps nationwide for over 20 years now, and we can work on almost any job, so please get in touch if you are interested.

Wetpour Rubber Playground Installation

Our team installed some EPDM rubber safety flooring for a playground in Newcastle. Check out the full process in the video below.

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you an EPDM Rubber Wetpour Flooring in Newcastle.

So this client were looking to build a new outdoor play area, and wanted to ensure that the surface they had fitted was perfect for the outdoor and prioritised the safety of those using it. We discussed the best options with them, and soon after we were on site getting to work.

The flooring we ended up agreeing on installing for this job was wetpour, a rubber surface that’s very popular throughout the United Kingdom. We’ve been fitting this flooring across the country for over 2 decades, and are proud to be industry leaders in the field.

The first big advantage of the wetpour flooring we install is the fact that it’s a porous system, which allows water to simply drain through the surface across our more rainy seasons. This makes it a very well suited option for outdoor play areas, particularly in this country.

In addition to wetpour being porous, it’s also a surface that puts safety first. Wetpour’s EPDM rubber make up means that falls and trips are absorbed brilliantly, and wetpour meets the critical fall height (or CFH) requirements needed for play areas in this country. This makes it one of the safest surface choices you can go for.

And the final advantage to wetpour is the ability to customise. Clients are able to have this flooring fitted in a huge range of colours, and can specify to have bespoke graphics fitted to their flooring if they like. This is all planned out during the enquiry stage, and feel free to get in touch if you are interested.

You can see here that the job has been fully completed, and looks excellent in the black they specified. The owners of the play area love the new surface.

Black Rubber Crumb Top up for Artificial Pitch

A synthetic turf sports surface is made up of plastic grass fibres along with an infill. The infill consists of either just sand or a combination of sand and black rubber crumb particles. This rubber infill on 3G sports pitches is very important as it helps to hold up the artificial grass fibres to keep them upright. It also gives the pitch the playing characteristics of natural grass.

Get in Touch

Sports Pitch Compaction Problem

If a 3G turf pitch is not maintained properly, over time the rubber crumb infill particles will start to compact and stick together deep into the turf fibres. This can lead to poor drainage as the compacted black rubber crumb blocks up the porous membrane of the surface and causes water to build upon the pitch. Golborne Sports Surface Deep Clean If there is water building up on the surface this can make the pitch less safe and also have a negative effect on the performance characteristics. Therefore it is important to keep your sports surface well maintained. You should do this to keep on top of the surface and prevent any major issues. Carrying out proactive work can reduce the need for costly repairs over time. It may require sports pitch rejuvenation if the surfacing becomes clogged up with dirt.

Maintenance and Infill Top Up

If you set up an appropriate maintenance plan for your rubber infilled sports pitch and regularly drag brush it to bring up the black rubber crumb particles, you will be able to maximise the durability and longevity of your artificial sports facility. However, over a long period of time, the turf fibres become weathered and worn out. When this happens it may be necessary to replace the rubber infill completely. This is because poor infill levels can have a negative effect on performance characteristics. It will also affect the water drainage of the pitch and potentially cause flooding. It is generally a good idea to top up the infill of your sports pitch every 1-2 years. This will ensure that you maximise the life expectancy of your facility and keep it in the best condition possible.

Artificial Grass Nursery Play Area Flooring

Artificial Grass surfaces can be used for a Nursery Play Area because this type of flooring eliminates the need for mowing, as well as reducing mud and mess on the children and their clothing when they are playing outside during break times. The artificial grass play area surfacing is low maintenance and is a great all weather surface design for nurseries in the UK.

Get in Touch

Artificial Nursery Play Area Specifications

With regards to the synthetic turf specifications then there are hundreds of different grades which can affect the prices of each individual project because obviously a low specification with little weight in the carpet will mean the costs are less and then a higher heavier weighted pile on the artificial grass would cost more to the client. See how the installation of artificial grass works if you are interested in having on of these surfaces at your home or public facility.

If people are wondering what is the difference between the lower specification of synthetic turf and higher design on artificial grass then it is the comfort underfoot and the heavier grass will feel softer underfoot and will also be more long lasting and durable than a cheaper grass grade.

Grass Mats installed on playgrounds are designed to have holes in the rubberised tile to allow grass to grow through the surfacing system. They are designed in the specification to be installed directly onto the existing ground conditions so are a cheaper system option because do not need any surface groundworks and preparation.

The grass matting safety surfacing is ideal when the costs, prices and budget is low because is an alternative to the wetpour rubber crumb surfaces, rubber mulch safer flooring and therefore is pushed by many play companies because they obviously want to get more equipment on the parks.

The play area safety grass matting can come in various sizes and dimensions but the standard size seems to be 1.5m x 1m tile at a depth of 23mm. This provides a CFH of over 2m for the playground equipment but other sizes and depths can also be specified in the design.
